Best place to live with a working dog breed......
My frustration with Florida and it's hot climate is getting bigger and bigger. The only activities you can do with an active dog without risking a heat stroke is in the water. Since dogs are mostly verboten wherever you go, we have two alternatives: a little salt water lagoon and the 2 mile long dog beach. I know, could be worse. What I would consider good working dog clubs are 2+ hours away. Tracking is almost impossible due to fire ants. I am seriously thinking of moving to a different state.
I am asking you fories to make suggestions for the best place to move with a working dog breed "to have it all" : low unemployment, low living and housing costs, woods and hiking trails, some body of water (lake, river), good working dog club(s), not too hot or too cold.
Any suggestions?

- Tell us about yourself: I have had a DS for almost a year. Gwen and I are considering participating in PSA and or possible Ring Sport. I also have a Great Dane. I have grown up around working GSDs and my last GSD was a working K9 officer. I am all about dogs and animals in general and want to learn as much as I can about training.
Re: Best place to live with a working dog breed......
I don't think there is a "perfect" place but I plan on moving to the Carolinas or somewhere where I can to water and my husband can have his mountains, trees and such... ( I like Michigan and even Ohio as far as topography but other than that well they @#$#!!#%%!#$#%!#^!233).. I drive almost two hours to go to club once a week and every other weekend. I have such a great time and so does Gwen so it is worth it for me to do it and the people are great .... I have lived on the west coast and Arizona but wouldn't consider going back there unless someone paid me a LOT of money.. I understand Tn and Ky are nice places to live..

Well......... I live in south western central (ish) Ct and its great for dogs here. Alot of water for swimming and chasing sticks, my dog park has a stream, there are plenty of clubs for what every you want to do, Protection to Agility within minutes . Not sure about the too hot or too cold, it depends on what you think is hot or cold but we did have alot of snow last winter. Plenty of hiking and biking trails for them and you. As far as costs... thats a different story, unemployment isnt the best and housing costs arent cheap ether, but there are plenty of foreclosures to check out.

Re: Best place to live with a working dog breed......
We live about an hour NW of Charlotte, NC. There is one huge lake and several smaller ones near us, we can be in the mountains to either the N or W in about an hour, and there's lots to do in Chlt. Unemployment is pretty significant, however Google and Apple just built facilities here. Cost of living is fairly low. The weather is great in winter - usually a couple of snows, just enough to be fun. Springs/falls are wonderful, but summers are the pits - HOT and HUMID. The only thing we don't have from your list are working dog clubs, but maybe I just don't know about them........? There may be plenty of activity in the dog world here and I'm just oblivious to it!

- Tell us about yourself: I own a Labradinger (mom Springer Spaniel and the dad a Labrador Retriever) Great dog. I love dogs. Of course! I have always loved shepherds and lately have really got hooked on the DS. I am in the early stages of educating myself so that in the near future when I purchase one, I am making a sound decision.

- Tell us about yourself: Dogs are my life, what can I say. GSDs primarily for nearly 50 years til bringing in my first DutchShep about 4 years ago. GSD rescue for 9 yrs, nearly 200 thru my home, rehabbed, adopted out. Been involved in AKC ob, herding, tracking, agility; Schutzhund-DVG; scent detection (HR-water)&narcotics, some patrol work. Mostly herding training at present on my little farm.
Re: Best place to live with a working dog breed......
Well, Louisiana is pretty much the same as Florida with weather -- hurricanes, 100+ degree summers with 95% humidity, skeeters as large as birds, and the fire ants, oh my my. Can ruin a young dog learning to track. They can cover bait in a few seconds. I got in some when we finally had a large rain last week and they were floating. Covered my legs and ankles in serious attack mode. One good thing is that we only have one or two short freezes, rarely any snow. There are 11 lakes and rivers within 20 minutes of my home and the dogs can run and swim, just be careful of gators and during hunting season as you and dog can be target. Housing is cheap. We have always been a high unemployment state, not because there arent jobs, but because we have a social-dependent society primarily. They work harder getting out of work to live off the system. Therefore Gov't jobs are abundant because someone has to shuffle all that paperwork. I would love to move up in the Carolinas near the coast and mountains or the NW, but hubby wont leave.

And so far as local dog clubs, notta, nil. Was a member of a DVG schutzhund club for 5 years but it folded about that long ago. Have to travel 2 hours minimum to train so.....

I love your comments and suggestion! Please keep them coming. This is so much more helpful than any info on the web. And it is from a big dog owner's point of view. Very important to me.

Re: Best place to live with a working dog breed......
I'll put my vote in for TN. I moved here from MI 3 years ago - and am SO glad for the more temperate weather. There are plenty of places to take your dog, but it is a different culture about animals down here. There are tons of strays and pets are just seen as objects around the farm. I think its the minority of people down here who treat them as family members.
That being said, no one complains and no one tells you what to do. We have Schuzhund everywhere, PSA in Middle TN and Chattanooga area, SDA was started here. The only thing we are currently lacking is the ring sports...and I would love to see that change!
Wages are comparable to most other places, but housing prices and taxes are low once you get just "out of town."
Let me know if you would like to come for a visit. I'm not THAT far from FL

Christie, thanks for the info about TN. It sounds great but I don't know if I could stomach all the strays and not become a "hoarder" and take them all in.
But we definetly have to take a road trip and check it out when the weather is not so hot. I have also a 13+ Lab (Marco's swim instructor) and our policiy is "nobody left behind - either everybody goes or we stay home".

My says central Indiana.
If you can put up with the egos involved there is a club here in town that has continual world level competitors... as well as a splinter group from them. Both Schutzhund.
There are also numerous "club level" groups all around the area.
Within a few hours are clubs for everything you want.
Cost of living is decent. Unemployment is on par for the rest of the country and depending upon what you do there are a lot of careers that have low unemployment here.
We have four seasons a year!
We are just a few hours from other large cities ... side note - I was recently at one of my favorite watering holes when a news crew from Chicago showed up to interview people. The news spot was about great places to visit within a tank of gas of Chicago. ... we go there ... they come here! LOL
