Sadie's vet appointment

Post by Dutchringgirl »

It was a good visit. Im glad I went. The doc looked at Sadies XRays and said she is mild. GOOD. He did a stress test and said she was good. He put his arm under her back hip and held her up and put stress on her hip joints and she did not have any ouchiness. He said, Like you said Christie, to do what I am going to do with her, and not hold back ,and see how she goes over time. Nothing is needed now. He said how she is physically will show more than xrays over time, she could show bad arthritis but be great.

What they do now is for a lighter dog, cut off the ball of the bone and leave it, the muscle and tendons will take over. That also depends on what the dogs job is too. For larger dogs and harder working dogs they replace the ball joint.

So all is well in Sadieville. :D :D

Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.

That's good. Have had dogs worse than that and they did fine for a long time. My Laekenois has Moderate, and he alternates between laying on a pillow and running around the back yard. Don't tell the bad guys that he has bad hips and they'll never know.

And how deep was your sigh of relief? So glad to hear it wasn't worse.

I am so glad to hear it Lisa. I'm not gonna lie, I cringed when I saw the picture only because I was thinking bone on bone pain. I am so glad that she gets to live a normal life and we'll see what happens.

I wonder if he was thinking "mild" on an OFA ranking system? They looked kinda worse than that to me - but I haven't seen THAT many.

Did Thalie come along for moral support?

Here's hoping for no issues now or in the future. If anything does come up, I think she would do fine with the FHO (procedure that you described). She's not gonna be working too hard, and she's a petite girl (wish I was :D ).

Thanks all. Her work wont be hard, I didnt plan on doing heavy duty stuff with her like I did with Thalie. She is our best friend, thats all she has to do. I still will try the hearding and SAR and see how she does. The vet did say her weight is good and she has a lean build, so she isnt a huge DS dealing with this. She has learned what hurts and how to compensate. When she plays hard with Thalie its not for that long anymore or they dont play as hard.

Since I cant peel Thalie away from me, sue usually does come everywhere

I do feel good about the future with her and what the options are if she does go down hill. Heck, Ill build her a cart if I have to and get a Rottweiler to pull her around. :g_wink:

I am glad to hear that it wasn't as bad as thought.

When I was researching arthritic pain relief, I came across this website http://faunasauna.com/faunasaunaproducts-2.aspx. I remember my grandma using a red light lamp to relief the pain in her shoulder. The red light frequency helps with the pain, naturally.

I bought a very inexpensive hand held massager (for humans) at Walmarts that has an infrared heat/massage setting. The head /neck thing swivels to get the right angles for holding it. Also has a bunch of snap on heads to massage yourself with. About a 18" long and easy to use. I think it was around $25.00. We used it on one of my daughter's old Boxers and she loved it, tho it took her a few minutes to get use to the vibration, after that she would assume the position every time we got it out of the box. (On the sofa, head on a pillow, leg extended and waiting for her treatment) I think Sadie would love one!

Just wondering if your Vet said anything about Adequan injections to help delay arthritic changes in the joint?

No, I was going to ask, I had my horse injected and it did wonders for him. I could always call them, it was a super nice office!

I be Sadie, and Thalie would love the massager. Thalie would like it after a long mountain bike ride !

Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.

Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!

I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences.
