Re: Acid Reflux
For the DE, it must be wet or if they breath it in it will irritate their lungs. Sorry if this was already mentioned, im late to this post

I forgot that I mentioned DE. Here is a link to a website with great info on DE: http://wolfcreekranch1.tripod.com/defaq.html

- Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.

Wolfcreek's DE is very expensive compared to some other places. Codex, food-grade DE can be had for much less if you shop around. I get 50# bags, free shipping, for about $68.00.

Re: Acid Reflux
I was just sharing the link because they have great info. However, according to Wolfcreek's website, a 50 lb bag + shipping is roughly $61.00 (26.99 for the DE + 34.00 shipping).
Honestly, I don't think that their prices are out of the ballpark from what I've seen.

Not to NY, I started out getting it from them years ago, when they were about the only supplier, in the smaller bags, and it was costing that for 2 gallon size bags!Stacy_R wrote:I was just sharing the link because they have great info. Well, I guess things have changed...LOL. Maybe they have a deal with a shipper and get flat rates. They didn't even ask for a zip code when I did a cart-check.

Re: Acid Reflux
Cool! I'm about ready to throw the book at him. One suggestion was that somehow during his probiotic course after the Alcon was that I somehow managed to get the wrong bacteria to grow in his stomach, sending him out of whack. Since he was on Microflora and then raw goat's milk I could kinda see how that might happen, buuuuuuuut…. I dunno. I'm going to put him on the colostrum after we're done with Flagyl and probiotic, reserving the slippery elm just in case he needs it, so I'm all for trying stuff!
You're close Stacey! Today is day 6. His poo is now mostly formed - I'd say close to 70/30 - and his gut seems to be calming as he's now back on a semi-regular schedule and has been for a day or two. No more yellow stools since his Orijen treats, a lot less mucus, and he's been staying in the brown to light brown color scheme for a bit. I still have him on the 1/2 cup meals every few hours and I think starting tomorrow I'll start trying to slowly up him back up to twice a day feedings.
I have a 2 pound bag of DE I got from the holistic pet store a few weeks ago as a "test". Isn't it crazy that shipping for DE is more than the bags????

Re: Acid Reflux
Sooooo here's some science-y studies on probiotics if anyone wants to read.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23952642
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24722235
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24033665
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23432387
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22547329
Basically they're using probiotics for all sorts of things and have found that pretty much it's only good for chronic dire rear, but even then it seems there is a BIG difference in probiotic strands that they're trying to understand the effects of. Yeah I got my geek hat on for a moment.
And uhm, I think I may have just found what caused H's problem… http://www.vetinfo.com/clostridium-diff ... ogs.html#b
The freaky thing is that the list nailed a few things that was so weird about his dire rear… like his straining and his constant intake of water (except for after he vomited) yet still seemed a little off. And the mucus….
Either that or a new study from Japan has linked a protozoan to similar symptoms, which turns out apparently lab tests are missing… (walks away from computer before she turns into a hypochondriac for H)

LOL...this was my favorite part of the whole post!!!Owned-By-Hendrix wrote:(walks away from computer before she turns into a hypochondriac for H)
And I can sooooo relate! There are times when I sit down at the computer thinking: "hmm, i need to check this out real quick." 4 HOURS LATER I am still there.
Glad to hear his stools are forming. I think you are on the right track. Poor guy just needs a boost.
Oh, what we don't do for our furkids!

Re: Acid Reflux
Google is not my friend at times. It's a love/hate relationship.
Yup. I jinxed myself with no more yellow poo. I think it it's his gut screaming "NO MORE" but it's still formed. Can't complain too much. Today is day 7 out of 10 so we're close!!! In the meantime H has decided the BEST gift ever is letting him poop on a spiky Japanese Sedge or Citronella Grass plant we encounter on a walk.

Re: Acid Reflux
I have absolutely nothing of substance to add to this post.
I just wanted to say that "dire rear" made me giggle like a twelve-year-old..
