It's the H3N2 virus - basically dog flu. Like the flu in humans, if you are young, older, or immune compromised, you are at higher risks. Most dogs recover fine.

Protocols are suggest to prevent dog to dog interaction because, like the flu, it spreads through close contact, so any one in the states who have reported it (Georgia, Alabama, California, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Washington, Montana, and Wisconsin - I believe that is a full list) should take care if their dog goes to dog parks, doggie daycare, or boarding. I believe there is a doggie "flu shot" so if you do have a younger/older or immune compromised dog, I would talk with your vet to see what your options are.

One other thought mentioned in the article.

Apparently, humans can't get sick from it, but they can carry it and infect dogs.

If you board your dog, they will make you give them the vaccine. Otherwise, its up to you
