Got a Malinois, Dutchie

Post by Mark77 »

From the litter it was 12 total dogs, five malinois, seven Dutchies. We got one of the Dutchies but she is wild. 18 months old and a whole lot of fun. I got her because she's the same age as my male Dutch. She's a handful though and very active. Basically bouncing off the walls. I never believed the whole "they are the same breed" but they are. Saw the litter videos myself.

Here she is somewhere in that video as a pup.

I take it you got her for breeding purposes?

And yes, they are crossed back and forth quite a bit, but that doesn't make them the same breed.

Actually I bought her as a friend for my dog Riddick, linked in my signature line below. I got her specifically because she ys the same age as him, about a month apart. Neither are fixed and of course act like two teenagers in love, constantly around one another, always playing together. I will likely get her fixed but do plan to breed him to more pure line Dutchies in the future and have been actively trying to find breeders who may be interested in his bloodlines- plus also he's UKC registered, which some may care about. He's a solid large framed male, very calm, very obedient, doesn't cause any problems and I think would make for very calm clear headed pups. Her on the other hand, she's about twenty five pounds less than him, a firecracker, probably because she's half Malinois which makes her somewhat nuts. She's a sweetheart though and am very happy with both dogs. I can leave him out all day while at work but her on the other hand- I'd be afraid the house would be burned down. She's no joke though, pure drive, very loyal, but way more energy than I'm used to with my other Dutchie.

According to this artilce, the Malinois and Dutchies are arguably ancestrally the same dog, just different colors I guess. Here's a good read on it:

Plus there are a few "Mal's" in my dog's bloodline that had Dutchie parents- Tara Maatman, a great grandmother to my dog for instance. Apparently it's not a problem for certain registries either because my dog is UKC titled/registered or whatever they call it.

Here is another example: Arko Kikkert. Has Mal's in his lines but sired probably a quarter of the grandparents for the current dutch shepherd breeding stock- hell almost all the Dutchie's are related to him or his grandfather Arno or his father Caster De Groot.
