Some traits can carry for generations before resurfacing.

Some traits can carry for generations before resurfacing.

One thing I noticed about my Dutchie Riddick is that he has slightly "longer" fur than any of his siblings, closest relatives etc. He has a "main" almost, bushier tail, and even has some long hair on his belly and between his toes- very wolf like. He isn't a true long haired dutchie, just has some longer fur than most I've seen. My trainer said maybe he had a long haired dutch shepherd for a parent. Pointed out that the KNPV lines were bred for ability and temperament not so much for "looks". However both his parents had short hair. So I started looking at the linked photos on the Pedigree Data Base. About six generations back, on his father's side, one of the females looked to have longer fur. The picture is small and hard to see but from what I could tell out of the 62 dogs prior to make my dog, one was a possible long haired DS. Interesting though that a single trait would carry six generations before showing itself again and then only surface in one dog.

The good thing, we had a ton of snow here recently. While my female who is a short hair would go outside and do her business, then want to come back in again, my male would sit outside in the snow for hours. He didn't want to come inside, so I guess the long hair serves a purpose. The pictures in the data base are from the summer, he sheds a ton of that coat it seems and then re-grows it in the winter but you can still see he looks "bushier" than most DS. Either way I just thought that was interesting.

Found this picture of a Long Haired Dutch Shepherd. I noticed his fur wasn't long like some of the other Long Haired DS I've seen pics of in the past, looks a lot like my dog.

I'm assuming you're talking about Winnie (Sider) on pedigree database? My Elli is a Jett daughter, so an aunt to your Riddick? It's my understanding, from talking to Malinois breeders and researching those lines that Winnie is from a line of fuzzy mals that have tervuren mixed in, not Longhaired Dutch Shepherds.

Elli has a long hair rear and tail. She's definitely not a fuzzy as Riddick, but she has longer fur than most short haired DS in the back. From what I've been seeing, a lot of the Land of Oz dogs are a bit hairier than other shorthaired DS. Almost all of those dogs have the terv mals in their lines, the fuzzier ones have it on both sides.

I don't think the fuzzier dogs are as rare as you think. Most DS pedigrees (especially KNPV if they're tracked) aren't translated for more than a few generations and a lot of pictures aren't online. I think if you traced every puppy coming from similar lines to Riddick, you'd find a whole lot more that carried the longer hair.

Here are a few others very closely related to your dog and Elli that show the fuzzier furnishings.

Yah I was talking about Winnie Syder. That has to be where that comes from. I've seen Elli's picture before and thought she looked a lot like Riddick, especially around the eyes. I personally like the fluffier look. Little wolves.
