Acronyms

Post by icvanstra » Sun Nov 21, 2010 6:14 pm

We had a request for some explanations of commonly used Acronyms. Not everyone on the board is familiar with every activity and we do have members from around the world who may not have the appropriate language context for an acronym.

So please populate this post with the acronyms that you are familiar with. With time, I will roll them up into a single post.

thanks,
eric

CGC - Canine Good Citizen
Not really a title, but a certification offered by the American Kennel Club (AKC) for any and all breeds. A demonstration of good manners

CPE - Canine Performance Events
Multi-breed agility.

FR - French Ring
see NARA and ARF

KNPV - Koninklijke Nederlandse Politiehond Vereniging

NADSR - North American Dutch Shepherd Rescue

NVBK - Nationaal Verbond van Belgische Kynologen
Loosely - Belgian Ring, but it is only one aspect of Belgian Ring. see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgian_Ring
NOTE: If someone can give me a better explanation please PM me

PSA - Protection Sports Association
A suit based, senario protection sport offering a PDC (Protection Dog Certificate) and three levels; PSA1, PSA2 and PSA3.

Raw - aka raw food fed to your canine
also see BARF

TDI - Therapy Dogs International
Also not really a title, but refers to dogs that have passed an evaluation as a therapy dog. This evaluation is offered by many groups: Therapy Dogs International, Therapy Dogs Inc., Delta Society....

UKC - United Kennel Club
Slightly smaller breed registry that does recognize the Dutch Shepherd. However, to get UKC recognition, you only need to submit three pictures and a pedigree which will not be researched. Therefore there are many direct malinois X in the UKC registry. Technically dogs need to be 3 generations pure brindle for registration, but again, it is not researched.

USDAA - United States Dog Agility Association
Multi-breed agility.

SchH (including levels SchH1, SchH2, SchH3) - Schutzhund, a dogsport with three separate phases Tracking Obedience and Protection. Originally formed as a breed suitability test for the German Shepherd Dog, in Germany in the 1920's. It is the most popular dogsport in the world as per numbers. There are several sanctioning bodies that hold trials, issue scorebooks, etc.

USA - United Schutzhund Clubs of America - the biggest Schutzhund sanctioning body in the United States currently. It is actually the German Shepherd breed club in the U.S., although they do allow other breeds to compete and achieve titles in club and regional trials. http://www.germanshepherddog.com

DVG - Dutscher Verband der Gebrauchshundesportvereine. The other "major" sanctioning body for Schutzhund in the United States, touted as the all-breed schutzhund club. It is overseen in Germany. http://www.dvgamerica.com at their website there is a great deal of information on the titles and rules to attain them.

VPG - Vielseitigkeitspruefung fuer Gebrauchshunde meaning "Versatility Test for working dogs" another name for SchH title, changed about 3 years ago. Just to add some more acronyms for us;)

IPO - don't know what is stands for honestly - again, same as a SchH title under international rules (bascially the same as DVG, USA, etc). The FCI's name for the title.

FH - literally "tracking dog" a test through the aforementioned sanctioning bodies, that is only tracking and more challenging than even the SchH3 track - at least 1200 paces, aged 3 hours, through varied terrain, with 4 articles that the dog must find. There is the FH1, and the more difficult FH2.

WH - another test "basic protection" or watchdog title.

AD - endurance test, where the handler bikes with the dog, for 12.4 miles.

RH - search dog suitability test.

BH "Begleithund" - translated "companion dog", a temperament and basic obedience test that must be passed before entering any trial for a bitework title (in Schutzhund).

I have only attempted to list the Schutzhund-related titles here! And I apologize to any Germans, not all titles or spelled out. Now off to take care of the dogs:)

In addition to Ashley's post:

IPO - Internationale Prüfungs Ordnung = International Examn Rules, programn is very similar to Schutzhund, main difference is in the protection, in IPO you MUST call your dog away from the helper after barking using "here" and "heel"command, where in Schutzhund or VPG you can choose, walk to your dog and lead him away with a "heel" command, or call the dog out.

FH - FährtenHund

AD - Ausdauer

RH- RettungsHund

BH - you also need this test before allowed to do FH
