- Tell us about yourself: DS and Mal foster newly approved aug'12 by NADSR and ABMCR. high-functioning Autistic in nyc/hamptons in my 60's. Rescued the smartest dog i had ever seen off nyc street in 2000. Tracedog's intelligence exceeded by multiples my judgement that day. My first [and only as of 10/2012] dog turned out to be a DS, perhaps with a touch of something else, but attention to detail, behavioral traits, and physical habits, movement, and skill identical to DS. But MUCH more intellectual ability. supremely confident in all settings, fearless, very outgoing and social with people and friendly with dogs. Seldom apart in over 12 years, Trace Dog was the most important relationship of my adult life; he was my partner. - Tell us about yourself: I am a partnered male who spends my time caring for my ailing mother. I was angry when my sister told me she brought home a stray puppy (I live with her), But upon meeting Ginger my heart melted. I loved my Valkyrie so much (A german shepherd Rott mix), I never thought I would meet a dog so sweet, smart, and beautiful, but there she was. I have no papers but I thing Ginger is the dutchiest dutchess in dutchland.
Re: Kella the wanna be
I'm highly skeptical of DNA tests, we haven't had the "canine genome project" and genetic differences between breeds; especially mixed with rare breeds, would be very difficult and subtle to precisely gauge, it just seems like we wouldn't be there yet, though they are prob getting better all the time..has anyone had more than one? would be interesting to see if they came up with the same result. Someone at my dog park got a crazy result, like yorkie, pointer and mastiff, and the dog looked just like a "rottie with tail"...but who knows...

I hadn't added all the photos I had planned to, when interrupted for family issues(and fun). Here are a few more(I hope they come through). The mini Dachshund is my daughter's dog Dutchie(Duchess).

I wouldn't trust the DNA tests.
From the pictures her fur looks too long for an SH and too short for an LH.
Something to me says a Black GSD.

Re: Kella the wanna be
The saddle pattern and coat are almost definitely GSD, but the hind legs don't have the angulation(sp?). Certain angles the face has a lab look also. But the main body color looks mostly black in photos, but has red-gold mixed in as well as the gray harness markings and britches. Some almost striped areas.

Re: Kella the wanna be
Whatever she is, she is absolutely gorgeous. I do see GSD in there (I am not an "expert" in GSD's, but I have owned 2 in the past - 1 was LH white GSD male and 1 was a black/tan female). I absolutely love the very first picture you posted of her in this thread...love her face and expression. She's lucky to have you!!!

Re: Kella the wanna be
The angles of the hind end aren't always over-pronounced. The over-angulated back and hind quarters is seen primarily in American show lines, not the German working lines. Neither of mine had them.KellaA+dog6 wrote:but the hind legs don't have the angulation(sp?).

Could be a black mal/Groendael mixed in too. I've seen some fuzzier mals and some of the working groendaels have shorter fur.

She is definitely the tallest, leanest basset hound I have ever seen!!! But hey...maybe that is where she gets her stubbornness....LOLDutchringgirl wrote:I did a DNA test on Sadie, and it came back Basset Hound !! Go figure !

is Sadie pure-bred basset hound? or is she a mix?!
that means Xander may also be -- which could explain how goofy he is!

Re: Kella the wanna be
Mara stated that there is ''red-gold mixed in....Some almost striped areas.'' there are plenty of DS that are very black, so much so that the striping is hard to read as stripes, especially when sunlight is not hitting the coat in the right way. my Tracer is that way; his stripes have been making a very slow appearance [ more every time someone else sees him, so i tell people he is ''earning his stripes''] and still are only noticeable as stripes in sunlight; otherwise it just looks like a smattering of gold.
as to hair length, Kella's hair length looks normal short-haired DS over the bulk of her body, but is a bit fuzzy around the hind legs and neck which is not that unusual. some of our DS have consistent very short hair and others have regal outcroppings of fur while still having very short hair on their backs, their ribs, the face, and most of their leg area. Riddick is a good example of a ''fuzzy'', very black DS. my TxXander is a selectively ''fuzzy'' red-gold-brown black-striped DS.
were it not for the mention by Mara of red-gold stripes, i would tend to agree with Stephanie re being a Belgian but for one thing: ALL the Belgian shepherds are in the wisdom panel so it would likely appear as such in a report. DS DNA causes these tests to spew out meaningless gibberish, so i believe Kella to simply be the DS she wanna be.
