How to exercise with a damaged leg
I hope nothing serious but Pepsi insists on running flat out everywhere when we are on our walks etc. She has developed a bad limp after yesterday’s adventures on a front leg. I don’t think it’s serious just a pull or something. My question is how to exercise a high energy dog with out causing any further injury. Jay

Re: How to exercise with a damaged leg
We have just done a couple of gentle walks round the block which has been fine. Indoors it’s proving difficult to keep her calm with comings and goings outside. This is gonna take some time to get her leg better. Jay

Yep. Brain activities. Get a bunch of small cardboard boxes and start your nose work

Re: How to exercise with a damaged leg
Thanks for replies, we’re doing just short lead walks. Doing basic obedience indoors but it’s all proving so difficult. She only has to here the slightest noise and she just goes off on one which is normal for her, it’s so difficult to stop her running about. The worst bit is she hates the vet and has to be knocked out in the car to get her in which is no good trying to find the problem with her leg. Jay

You might consider crate and leash-when-not-in-crate for a couple of days. Sometimes they need a little direction to save them from themselves.

Maybe an educated guess, seems to have done the trick. Would have loved to have taken her in but she has to be knocked out in the car to get her in the vets door. Re: How to exercise with a damaged leg
She is now nearly nine months. It didn’t appear until she was probably about 7.5 months. I’m putting it down to two different causes over exercise with the ball which she loves but plays very hard with and growing in spirts. She goes from looking a little plump to skinny looking but looks taller. She’s about 25” to the shoulder now and 64lb and is going through another skinny stage. Possible growing pains. The anti inflammatory drug we put on her food when this happens makes it go away after a couple of very low dose treatments limp is intermittent. Jay

well, no, it does not go away, she does not feel any pain, what ever is there is still there if it is intermittent. The drug is masking the pain and she could still be injured. If this is going on for 2 months, I would be taking her to the vet.

Re: How to exercise with a damaged leg
She is good off the lead and is ok with people and other dogs. Excellent indoors with her own family and other dog she lives with. On the lead is another matter which is improving over time, she will not let a stranger come to close or another dog. She has always been this way. Going to the vet is another story all together, the last visit involved me holding her down in the car whilst the vet put her to sleep to examine her. So as you can imagine a vet trip is a real pain for all concerned. Jay

Yea what Lisa said. I wouldn’t go exercise her just because the pain seems to be gone. Could further injure herself.Dutchringgirl wrote: ↑Thu Feb 21, 2019 2:51 pm well, no, it does not go away, she does not feel any pain, what ever is there is still there if it is intermittent.
