Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.

"View unread posts", Mac vs PC

Post by Sugars Mom »

Hi. Just curious:
When I look at the forum, the first thing I do is click on "View unread posts". Once I've read the first post, I click on the "back" button on my Mac to get back to the list of unread posts and I go to the next one listed, etc. I was away last week and was using someone else's computer; a PC, and when I clicked "back" like I always do, it took me back to the list of unread posts but the one I just read was no longer listed. Makes sense 'cause I just read it, but on my Mac, they don't disappear from the list...not until I get right out of that section. No big deal, but I kinda liked the list being only what I've actually not read. Does anyone know if there is something about my computer that would make the difference or if its the forum that acts differently with PC vs Mac? I use Firefox, if that makes any difference.

Not a MAC user and don't have one to test with either, so I'm not going to be able to help much on this one.

Maybe Bob will chime in since he knows a lot more about the software than I do.

Back button works differently in some browsers.
Best and easiest I've found is to bookmark the 'view unread posts' link and just hit the bookmark again after reading each post. ;)

Hi Sue, I had not tried the unread posts only before  , (How handy!!!). But on my Mac, when I hit the back button it only shows the ones that I hadn't read. I think that I am on Leopard if that makes a difference.

For the board features to work as designed the back button should not be used, only a refresh will work properly.

Im on a PC so cant help with the Mac, but I also have the "view new post" bookmarked but after i have read a thread I dont use the back button, Like Pitt said, It is not good to use it. Not that is bad but it wont refresh. I go to board index and then new posts each time.

I have tried bookmarking the unread posts page but after I read a post and click on the bookmark, the post I just read is still showing up. Whatever, no big deal...

Try clearing your browser cache completely, remove and reestablish the the bookmark to 'view unread'.
It shouldn't be a cookie issue as this is done via the database. If this doesn't help I suggest a browser issue is raising its ugly head, I will do further checking and I'll reply to this topic if I find a solution.

I cleared my cache but didn't see how to remove the bookmark to re-bookmark it. Its got to be an easy thing but I couldn't figure it out.

If I read a post then click on the bookmark, the same post I read is at the top. If I click on it, the "view unread post" shortcut link at the top of the thread to jump to the part I've actually not read is not there so it knows I've read it. If I post to something then click on the bookmark, it shows me being the last person who posted so it seems kinda weird. Anyway, its like it doesn't refresh totally and remove the read posts from the bookmark unless I close the forum then go back. Again, no big deal...I wouldn't worry about you spending a bunch of time figuring it out.

When you refer to 'bookmark' are you speaking of the option at the bottom of the screen 'bookmark this topic'
If so it is viewed in your user control panel under manage bookmarks and can be removed there or by clicking the 'remove from bookmarks' in the same location.

The bookmark I was referring to was one I put on my browser toolbar...ha ha, I never noticed the bookmark at the bottom of the page. I did figure out how to delete the one I had on my toolbar and will try the on on the bottom of the page.

ok, so the bookmark at the bottom is for the topic...but if I click on the board index link at the bottom when I'm done reading the post then I can click on the unread posts. Then only the unread ones show up.

The easiest way I find is to use the link at top of index page and go to 'unread', right click and open each topic/post you want to read into a new tab. After reading close the tab, refresh the 'unread' tab, repeat the process as needed. I usually set the 'unread' tab to auto refresh every 30 seconds which automates the process.

Maybe try chrome on the mac? Safari isn't the best browser.
