When your dog know more than you

Post by ladyjubilee »

One of the service tasks we are working on is alerting. We started with Bramble alert when the school bus comes. She's been doing great.

So Thursday, she suddenly alerted, but there was a big truck going past and we didn't respond as we thought she was confused. She kept alerting...and there was the bus.

Yesterday, she alerted, and a different school bus flew past....but she kept alerting, and looking from me to the backpack to my son..and even went to the backpack. There was the bus.

I finally caught on that she can hear the bus before I can see the bus over the hill AND she know the sound of "his" bus.

My mom said that Bramble gave me a "you're not very smart" look when I finally got my son out the door.

Its not really smarts. Dogs hearing is so much better than ours. You taught her to react to a specific sound and she is. They know your car over a regular car. They know your footsteps from another. Working dogs are bred to do what we teach them and that is what she is doing. Sadie lets me know when the basset hound is waiting to come in. That I didnt even teach her.

I think it would be a great tshirt ;)

I still think it's smarts...she is trained to alert to the bus, but she figured out on her own that my son has to put on the backpack and go out the door. And she doesn't even run to get on the bus any more!

I know im a buzz kill :DSlove: After years of training ring sport and having these dogs do escorts and search and holds all on their own. I am not surprised that she knows exactly what bus is his and what he is supposed to do. Sadie drives me nuts because she knows my routines better than I do
