“She still has a lot of puppy left in her,” said her handler, Officer Bill Watts. But that’s to be expected as Kailah (pronounced Kayla) is still only one and half years old.

The Dutch Shepherd was born in the Netherlands and bred specifically to be a narcotics-sniffing dog, Watts said. She was trained in a K-9 training camp in Louisiana, where Watts joined her and spent six weeks in specialized training. And since her initial training was in the Netherlands, Watts gives his commands in Dutch.

Belmont K-9 a finalist to win SUV

K-9 Officer Tuco and his partner and handler, Deputy Chad Kulpa of the Belmont County Sheriff’s Department, are asking for help and online votes online through October, as Tuco competes with other K-9 officers in a nationwide contest for a new SUV K-9 patrol vehicle worth up to $50,000.

Tuco has been named one of 30 finalists in the Vested Interest in K-9 Law Enforcement Sports Utility Vehicle Giveaway.

Tuco, a 3-year-old Dutch Shepherd who has been with the department for two years, is a bomb-detecting dog and is often utilized during threats and visits by officials.

New K-9 Announced at Council Meeting

McCook Police Officer Bill Watts introduced to the council his “partner,” the new K9 officer, Kailah, a Dutch Shepherd. The dog can detect several different narcotics simply by smell. City Manager Nate Schneider said the SUV used to transport Kailah was donated by Webster County, that has eliminated its K9 service. In response to a question by Councilman Jerry Calvin, Watts said they are not in the position at this time to lend Kailah to other counties, but will be able to do so in the future

K9 Max is a two-year-old Dutch Shepherd working with his handler, Corporal Brock Gruner, for the Lubbock Police Department in Texas. He is a multi-purpose police dog, trained in narcotics detection as well as criminal apprehension. K9 Max and Cpl. Gruner are certified with the National Narcotics Detection Dog Association in both narcotics and patrol work. K9 Max has been credited with several narcotics finds and suspect apprehensions since joining the department in February of 2019.

CCSO notes that K-9 Jack, a 2-year-old Dutch shepherd, was rescued after someone saw him being thrown “from a moving vehicle in North Georgia.” Jack was later adopted by the Hiwatari Kennel, which discovered his policing talents. K-9 Jack came to work for the Clayton County Jail on Feb. 5, sniffing out drugs that people try to smuggle into the jail.
