Xena's frustrating day (long, sorry)

Post by Lauren »

Boy, yesterday went on forever. It felt like from the time we woke up to the time we went to bed Xena was having to be told "no" about everything she thought was a good idea.

No, you can't lunge at passing cars. No, you can't chew and pull at the leash. No, you can't attack your aged brother, or the cats, or my son, or the chickens, or rabbits, or other dogs on leashes, or AND this is a biggie: skateboarders!

After a frustrating morning of no's we took her with us to run errands. One of them was near a skateboard park so while my son was shopping for a helmet, Xena and I worked on her not lunging and screaming at the skateboarders. They were safely behind a 5 ft fence, mind you in case my collar gave way. :ds:
She got to where we could get about 10 feet away without her losing it. At one point she almost went for me. I could see it. I was just stepping in between her and the skateboarders, then click and rewarding for any eye contact~ But just once I got a snarl and glare AT ME.

We also took her to lowe's. That is a great training place for us! She gets to see and hear lots of new things, pass lots of people (now that she is bigger people just kind of part for us to pass :D ). She has to get used to her flock being separated and meeting back up. We do some hide and seek, too. Down stays while we choose lumber etc. But the highlight of the whole day was when we went out of Lowe's for a minute while my husband and son were checking out. After about 10 minutes they STILL were not out, so we went back in. I took her to their cart, let her smell the bag and said "find them". BOY! Was she great at it! She systematically looked down every aisle, caught a scent and went oneway, back out and just when I was telling her to turn around cause I thought she was on an old scent, she perked up and pulled me straight to them!!! Less than 5 minute in a crowded Lowe's and they were at the opposite end! What a good girl!

But whenever she has to exercise self control it REALLY lowers her threshold for other frustrating things. So by the end of her frustrating day even though she had probably logged 10 miles on lead and play time in the yard, she was fit to be tied. The only way to fix that is a good game of towel tug until she settles down. :tired:

Let's hope today is a little bit easier on my girl (and me, too)!

When those moments happen, I just put them out with Rowdy and Willow. Let them be as nuts as they want - the elders will school them better than I ever could.

Is it bad that when my pups are making me crazy (like, little pups), I just crate them with Willow. She won't let them scream and absolutely won't let them potty in the crate. I like having a nanny.

Don't tempt me, Christie. You are only 4 hrs away! A few more days like that and a drive to Aunt Christie's to play with the big dogs will almost seem reasonable!

I wish my older dogs would school Boaz. Boaz doesn't seem to care what a Belgian has to say to him.

lol Our little dog Chewie gets so mad at Merlin. He trys to straighten him out, but with no avail. When Merlin really is being a puppy and annoying him, he knows when Chewie gets mad at him and will try to beg forgivness. He will bring him sticks and things like that as gifts.

That does sound familiar...
I usually take them for a bike-ride or something, but yours is still a pup so you should wait with that. Playing tug sounds like a good frust-release, as long as you win in the end ;)

Reminds me of a frrrrustrated Dingo this morning  We had to go to the DIY store, and planned a little walk in a nearby forest first. As we walked (amazing how a mother of 7 still has the energy of 10 dogs... ) we noticed some horse pooh on the road, I told Johan "make sure we watch them on the way back, Dingo will eat it" So Johan did watch him and as Dingo went for the nice chunks of poopoo, Johan hit him in the butt with the back of the leash, saying "NO" he turned around and as he does not (anymore  ) dare take it out on us, he turned back and walked on...bummer for those people in long trenchcoats just coming around the corner :? We had not seen them coming, but Dingo heard them, he ran up to them barking, and of course tho woman that was scared the most got aimed at... (he just barked and clearly had fun scaring them ) We apologized and they were not happy... not really pissed either (I would have been).
Right, back on topic :)
