Facebook page.Last night we had to take Sugar to the emergency. She was sleeping beside us on the couch and woke up around 10 pm to throw up. It was disgusting and smelly and I took her outside in case she had to do any more.
Then, she got all wobbly. While standing, she was swaying back and forth. I thought she was going to pass out. She looked dazed but responded to her name and came when called. Needless to say I was freaked out and called the vet hospital.
They said it sounded like pot toxicity. I’m like “WHAT??” We don’t smoke pot so there isn't any in the house. But, earlier on our evening walk, she had found something at the school when we were walking past. She was off leash and ran to the school building, around the corner, out of my sight for a moment and ate something. I had no idea what it was. The kids are always leaving leftover lunches/snacks in the school yard and I have to stop Sugar from gobbling stuff up, and that was what I figured she had found. I was annoyed at myself for not keeping her in my sight to stop her from eating something, and annoyed at her for running off out of my sight. She is very good at staying with me normally. Anyway, the Vet thinks it was pot she found, maybe the end of a joint or something.
They gave her something to induce vomiting, a charcoal treatment to absorb the toxins and kept her overnight to hydrate and watch her.
They let her come home this morning and she has been sleeping all day now. My poor baby!
I will be really strict with her off leash opportunities from now on!

My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.
Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!

My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.

Now, it is Spring Break, and the school backs onto some fields and a wooded area and I have smelled pot in the air on occasion, so I know it happens...and the part of the school where Sugar went is way under a large overhang, kinda private-ish and I've seen older kids hang out under there (of course when there is no school) so thinking about it now, kinda makes sense, but still, I was thinking, who leaves their pot at a school??

Shes still sleeping...all day! I just fed her dinner. She ate it up, then right back to being curled up. I added water to her food as she hasn't drank anything either.

- Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.

GSD rescue for 9 yrs, nearly 200 thru my home, rehabbed, adopted out. Been involved in AKC ob, herding, tracking, agility; Schutzhund-DVG; scent detection (HR-water)&narcotics, some patrol work. Mostly herding training at present on my little farm.

Gosh, I am sorry to hear this happened. Glad that she will be ok. Keep an eye on her.
You mention BC and all the potheads. I remember many years ago when I took a driving trip into BC and at the checkpoint into BC, they asked if I had any weapons but didnt care if I had any drugs, which I didnt. Came back across into the states, and they asked if I had any drugs but didnt care that I had my Glock with me. Weird.

I'm wondering tho, how can they be sure it was pot, and not something els? There is tons of stuff that can make a dog realy sick and wobbly afterwords, did they do a bloodtest or something? (just curious)
I remember as I trained with a SAR group we had a dog that ate junkie pooh
once... (we were training in a abandoned building, with permission, and were told to chase any junk we found out, locate them and call the cops) So we knew they were in there, and there was no running water anymore, and they did sleep there etc...without a loo... Well you get the picture. This dog ate pooh and she has acted weird al evening 
She was ok the next morning, but it was pretty scary.

They said they can do a urine test but said it would just cost more money. They said she was acting like a dog with pot toxicity (besides the wobbles, she had a low heart rate, dialated pupils, vomitting) and they said they see it all the time, so how am I to know. I guess there is no way to know for sure, but now she is better, so very, very glad about that! I was sooo freaked out to see her struggle to stand up that night.
