Cut ear

Post by Diesel »

Diesel got a pretty bad cut on his ear.
We were at a bbq on Friday and the dogs were playing in the snow, my friend came by with his dog who has been agressive towards Diesel in the past but in general is a lovely dog. Last summer this dog bit Diesels ear on 2 seperate occasions.
So everyone was up on the deck and the dogs were running around the yard. Once Diesel started getting attacked my husband jumped off the deck about 10ft to the ground (but with lots of snow it was a soft landing) and got this dog off Diesel. He said he doesn't even remember jumping off, he just reacted.
So Diesel was left with a pretty big cut on his ear. I'm pretty sure I could see the cartilage but I guess there's not much flesh there to begin with.
For the rest of the night, the more dominant little sister- Halo protected Diesel from this other dog by getting in front of him whenever he would start chasing Diesel.
Anyone have any suggestions for first aid? We've been cleaning it every day but that's about it. I have thought about liquid band-aid or polysporin but I also think it will just heal on it's own-naturally.

wow, sorry to hear this and hope the ear heals soon. Sorry I can't help you with first aid, but I'm sure someone on here can. Not sure but, I think you can use Neosporin.

Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.

Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!

I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences.

Aww, poor Diesel. Sugar sends hugs up that way.

I'm not a medical professional, but I know you can use polysporin on dogs.

sorry to hear!! He may not like it wrapped so I Sue said polysporin is okay, I would do that and keep him quiet. If he will let you wrap it, I would try gauze and vetwrap. Do you have some Iodine wash to wash it with?

Here comes something from the holistic department.....

If you have a health food store that sells loose herbs, buy calendula and make an infusion, I good tablespoon to a cup of water, boil it for 15 minutes then let it steep for a while. Dip a cotton cloth in it and make a warm wrap. But only when there is no infection and the wound is clean, since it closes the wound very quickly.
