Facebook page.I've posted about this before but this is the worst I've seen. Diesel has been rubbing his face on the carpet, mainly his eye. I no longer believe this is an allergy. I have been giving him Benadryl and it is not working. I went and got a cone for him but I could only find a flimsy fabric one which does nothing to prevent him from rubbing his eye.
He has rubbed his right eye to the point where it is swollen and there is a loss of fur. The other eye is perfectly normal. It does not appear to be infected. I've been wiping it clean with just paper towel and water.
I don't really know what else to do. I try to avoid the vet as they seem pretty useless in this department. Not to mention $75 just to ask a question.
Anyone have any advice on this? Is there a safe ointment or something I could use to help heal/stop the itching?

I know what you mean about avoiding vets, but if I were you, I'd get him in to see a vet opthalmologist (however you spell that 
). Cheap? No. But, if something is wrong with his eye, or in the skin around his eye, that'll be the best person to help.
(If my dog had a serious skin problem, I'd go straight to a dermatologist, too. I love my general vet, but there are some things that you just have to bypass them for, since you'll end up there anyway, often.)

After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.

Once had a GSD who had a seed from some weed in the yard that had stuck to the eyeball,I couldn't see it, caused rubbing like you wouldn't believe, and had to be removed under anesthesia. Go to the vet!

I remembered that I had ointment left over from the last time his eye flared up. I did some research before using it and I determined it was safe to apply to his eye.
It has really helped, his eye is almost back to normal.
I also steam cleaned the carpet this weekend for both general cleaning and to prevent any further allergy flare ups if it is an allergy he is suffering from.

Unfortunately, we only have 2 vets here, neither are specialized. Next time I go south, I will look one up for sure. Glad its better! The only thing I know about eye goop is that if it has steroids in it and the eyeball is scratched, the goop can hurt the eye.
