Watchdog?? Not.........

Post by Dutchringgirl »

Sitting in bed watching TV, Sadie starts to bark, she has never barked once we go to bed. So I get up to look, Thalie, of course, is still on her bed with a disturbed look on her face, I walk by Sadie who is up and alert, I open my bedroom door, turn the hallway light on and look downstairs, I look at Sadie to tell her to go downstairs to investigate............what does she do??? Puts her head down and slinks back into the bedroom..........

Actually, she did her job well! She's supposed to alert you; you're the boss and the one to take care of whatever it is!

Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.

Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!

I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences.

   Ok Leigh you got me there ! Thalie would go downstairs and investigate when I told her to. Thalie also had search and hold training, where Sadie......not so much. I did go down but all was kosher. Probably just house noises, I have creaky floors. She didnt even follow me down, she stayed at the top of the stairs watching.

Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.
Can't wait for all the snow to get gone! Spring is coming too slow this year!

During the day she is " the dog who cried wolf" Always barking at something, leaf, frog in the pool, thalie, but at night she is super quiet, so when she did bark, I got up to look, and she had me. :pint:

I usually only look when Thalie barks, because she NEVER barks, and when she does, I know there is something there.

Exactly. I expect my dogs to alert me to any unknown noises at night, and slow whomever down long enough for me to get to my gun. Both of the two seconds.

Mine is always alert except the one time when some jerk broke into my car just outside an open window next to where the dog sleeps.
