Facebook page.Recently one of the managers of the Rehab Facility my grandmother was recovering in after hip surgery met our DS Ella. She loved Ella's disposition and invited her to spend some time with the elderly patients at the center.
Ella was FANTASTIC! For only being 1 year old, she was so calmed and collected. She was gentle and even gave a few licks. I was so proud I had to share.

Is Ella normally very good and sociable around people or did you have to train her to be that way. Amber is naturally protective and we're working on desensitizing her to meeting people on the street and our friends.

Ella is amazing around humans. There was one time on a walk through San Francisco that she growled at a homeless man that was shouting at people. When my wife passed him, Ella began to growl at the man, but immediately stopped when I gave her a little tug and told her to come along.
I believe in socialization and from the moment we got her I have taken her to places that are crowded, loud and full of every type of distraction. We started with an outdoor shopping center and long walks through San Francisco. Now that we are in a smaller community I take her with me to every place I can that has people. We sit out in front of Starbuck's all the time.
To answer your question, I think she just came like this. BUT I'm sure getting her around people has helped a lot. I've had many people tell me not to do this because you don't want your DS getting used to people to the point where they are no longer protective, but I don't think that Ella would ignore a situation where she needed to step up and be protective.
I would recommend taking her to some of these places if you feel it's manageable. We are to the point where she pretty much ignores people unless they approach me. She'll give them a sniff and accept any affection they give, then go back to ignoring them.
