Tell us about yourself: Hi there. I WILL be a new Dutch Shepherd owner on July 20th!!! Puppies are on the ground and a huge litter at 14! Very excited. I chose the Dutch because I like high drive dogs and my husband likes shepherds. We both have had GSDs in our past. I also am interested in search and rescue training. I live in the mountains of California and have two older Australian Shepherds. I do know that I have a job managing this pack. My husband is on board with it all. No kids. Both of us have flexible jobs. We are active folk but aging! ;-)) Still we mountain bike, hike, cross-country ski and my husband runs. I walk in the woods with the dogs 3 times a day and we are lucky to have US Forest right out the door. So that is it.
I have a 12 week old DS and am using a large plastic crate in my car. At night we are using one of my soft crates but that is not going to last. This pup is el destructo and I know if given the chance he would go through the screens on a soft crate. So I wanted to get another plastic crate for the house for nights and if I have to leave him in the house (and until...hoping.... he loses this destruction/chew thing). What size are you all using for an adult? This pups father was about 70 lbs and mother about 60 lbs. Seems like an extra large (approx. 42 long by 30 high I think) would be the size to go with. Other recommendations?

I started Cino in a 300 (baby/puppy) and then moved him to a 500.
Used a wire crate for a little while and that was HUGE mistake! He did some serious damage to his canines gnawing on it.
For us it was several years before I could trust him in the house free.
Strongly recommend that you make sure the crate is ALWAYS a happy place. Never use it for punishment. Time outs, rest, relaxation and a place for them to know that it is safe and comfortable.
