Tell us about yourself: I currently have 3 dogs - Akita, Dand and Doberman, all rescues. I am considering to get a 4th WORKING LINE dog earliest next year and are considering the following breed: Malinois or Dutch Shepherd. Articles would only give a general view, but none of the day to day life with a DS. I am joining this forum to have a good understanding of the breed.

Hi All,
I am from Southern California and as part of my research of the breed, I would like to ask for anyone who would be willing for me to see their DS and talk to them about it. I have seen and worked some for a few hours, but I feel those experiences are not enough. Karin and the rest of the Funky x Eran litter owners have been posting valuable information for would be DS owners like me. The pics posted remind me so much of my dobie's feistiness although theirs are much higher drive, from what I can gather.

I am thinking of meeting pups with varied drives - the extreme drive, super high drive, high drive and average. I am also interested in meeting pups, adolescent (7-14 months old), 18 -24 months (the most difficult period) and 3-4 years old. A park or training club would be good options. I will be doing AKC, SDA and Agility with the DS. Not sure about urban mushing yet. :)

I will also be travelling the 2nd half of September for a few days to Idaho, Montana, Arizona, Utah. MIght be lucky enough to go to San Francisco too.

I hope my request reaches DS owners who are willing to share their time in imparting valuable information. Please PM me.

I WILL be a new Dutch Shepherd owner on July 20th!!! Puppies are on the ground and a huge litter at 14! Very excited. I chose the Dutch because I like high drive dogs and my husband likes shepherds. We both have had GSDs in our past. I also am interested in search and rescue training. I live in the mountains of California and have two older Australian Shepherds. I do know that I have a job managing this pack. My husband is on board with it all. No kids. Both of us have flexible jobs. We are active folk but aging! ;-))
Still we mountain bike, hike, cross-country ski and my husband runs. I walk in the woods with the dogs 3 times a day and we are lucky to have US Forest right out the door. So that is it.

I would be happy to have you meet Tygo but I am in the Lake Tahoe area. Are you on Les Flores's Facebook site? There is an Anubis there... is it you? Because there is a pup in the LA area that you might be able to see sooner. And one of the pups went to San Diego. Let me know if you need some introductions.

Tygo is sweet as twinkies the morning, a lounge lizard in mid-day and satan at about 7 PM for an hour or two.
I'm guessing he will be medium/high drive dog. I'm happy to talk with you more privately or on the phone.

Tell us about yourself: My name is Emily. I am the mother of two girls (human!!). We have one beagle named Charlie who is three and a new puppy named Asha. She is about 9 weeks old and we think she is a Dutch Shepherd Dog mix.

I want to correct something I said... I think of Tygo as a high drive dog with energy that does switch off at bedtime and after a nice long walk/hike. I wonder though if he is a medium when it comes to the DS's out there including the KNPV lines.

If you ever come out to Michigan, you're more than welcome to meet my gang. Elli is 2, extremely high drive, but loves everyone, hits like a train, and can be a bit bitchy if she doesn't get her way.

Odin is a massive caffeinated love boat to his friends, but has a civil side around strangers until introduced properly. He meets strangers with a muzzle on, but can be worked by most people. Both do agility. Both do comp obedience. Odin does nosework and Elli is doing protection sports for fun. I don't know if I'll ever compete with her in that. We're trying tracking and getting more into dock diving eventually.

They couldn't be much more different though and would give you a good example of adult dogs. Odin has finally hit maturity and is calming down a bit. If you do come out this way after the end of September, I hopefully will have a decent facility set up.

Just curious, what events do you want to do in AKC? There are a whole bunch.

Make a trip to TN ;-)

We have 6 6-week olds, 5 10-month olds, 2 18-month old NADSR rescue fosters, a 3 year old, a 4 year old and a 6 year old. Unfortunately, my 12 and 15 year old passed away throughout this past year. But we used to have the WHOLE spectrum covered.

Also, keep in mind that you want to see lots of different lines. They all have some neat similarities...and some big differences. Les's dogs seemed to have turned out wonderful. There are also the Titan, FR3 lines out there. We have bred on that quite a bit which brings a lot of biddability to the table. The Vrijheid lines have consistently produced stable working dogs for many, many years. Asheley has been breeding top quality working dogs since her first litter 9 years ago. In fact, it was Vrijheid's Aaron that turned Les on to the breed.

Then there are the KNPV lines - which are diverse in themselves. Some are sharp as hell and quick to come up the leash. Some are big and stoic, but have a great off switch. So it would benefit you a great deal to see the diversity that exists within the breed!!!

Karen, I would appreciate if you can introduce me to the San Diego and LA pup owners. This is a good way to start. :) I love the topic you just posted on chew toys...it really helps new owners and wannabe's like me. I will PM you my phone no. Would love to hear from you!

Asha, I came across the term Urban Mushing when I attended the Bark At The Park dog event 2 years ago. My dog likes it. It is also known as Canicrossing, Bikejoring, Dog Scootering, Carting, anything sledding on wheels. :)

Stephanie, I would like to start the pup with Star Pup and CGC, then on to obedience titles without the X's for now, Rally, Agility (might do NADAC too). I would love to try dock diving but the nearest class from my place is a 4 hour drive. :( I'll just go to the lake for a swim and play retrieve. :) I am waiting for a nosework beginner's class to open (not AKC). That would be interesting too. :)

Christie, I wish I could schedule my flight to TN right now. All circumstances permitting, I will try to, next year. For the time being, I will do some local and nearby state search.

We are in Utah (Vrijheid) and might be traveling to L.A. area for a weekend in October for a French Ring trial. If we do go, we will likely have 3 dogs entered and possibly a puppy in tow, but should be able to visit a bit with someone who wants to meet DS. There will likely be other DS at the trial as well from various bloodlines - Cary Peterson with "Animal" and Mark Kundert with "Grendel" boht belong to the host club, good chance they will have their dogs there either entered or helping do Dog in White. All the dogs there are going to be bred for work, but they are still very different from one another in ways.

Yes, Les was impressed with DS when he worked with Aaron from my first litter (born 10 years ago), and subsequently we made an arrangement for him to train and trial Aaron. Les actually met the Stienstras because he was able to go to Holland with Aaron for the DS championships there, several years ago.

Feel free to contact me if you ever want to meet! SLC is about 11 hour drive from L.A., there isn't much in between except desert and Las Vegas - but hey, who doesn't love Vegas!?
