Tell us about yourself: A fairly new DS owner. I busted Boss Dawg (aka JoJo) out of the clink on St. Patty's Day of this year. He was the only dog in the place who sat quietly and calmly in the middle of his kennel without making a peep, while every other dog was going barking mad. I didn't know anything about his breed at the time. Just that his size was good, I knew he wouldn't grow beyond it, and that he could handle all the hiking and jogging I could throw at him (now I know that to be the understatement of the century). The pound identified him as a Dutch Shepherd mix. Having had him these last months and attempting to educate myself on his breed background, if I had to guess a mix, I would say DS and Belgian Malinois. Adopting this dog has kept me VERY busy these last months. :) But good busy. He's a smart and wonderful dog.

Hello -

Just a brief intro from myself and Joseph J. Dog (a/k/a JoJo, Handsome Joe, Boss Dawg, etc., etc.). I recently adopted JoJo from a large adoption event in March. He was apparently a stray picked up by animal control and was at the pound for 3 weeks before being brought to the event for adoption. All pound dogs are a bit of a crap shoot, but he was so calm, cool and collected while in a huge coliseum filled with dogs for adoption that I thought he would be a good choice. He fit my size requirements (I like to hike and jog and wanted a dog that would enjoy those activities). They told he me was a 1.5 year old Dutch Shepherd mix.

The honeymoon period was our first two weeks together. He was the calmest, quietest dog I'd ever seen. Quiet everywhere. House, car, etc. Very mellow. Once the honeymoon was over, all bets were off. Three weeks in he went batshit crazy (pardon the expletive). Running around the place like he had a rocket lodged up his posterior, reallllllly "chompie," but luckily once I started reading about the breed, I understood why. So the immediate goal was house training him, crate training him, and getting him to walk on a leash and respond to some basic commands. And learn what stairs were (I live on the 3rd floor), and that the toilet wasn't a monster that was going to swallow him whole. I quickly learned that the more structure the better with The Joe. Some days I felt like a drill sergeant, but he responds well to it, so I kept at it. And he has learned. Quickly (which I love).

He's an 800% happier dog and I am an 800% happier owner, after we've come to a few important understandings as dog an owner, and gotten house training and most of the basics under our belts. We have a long way to go, but he's decided to adopt me, as well, so we're in it for the long haul.

Suffice it to say I am here to learn, since this ain't your average dog and we still have a lot of work to do. With that in mind, thanks for your patience! :)

Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.

Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!

I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences.

I actually laughed out loud and looked at Tyson when I read this... His favorite "game" is to go up the stairs and then ZOOM down. When he was a puppy he would continue from the stair run onto our sectional and race around it, launching off of the arm into the hallway. My husband thought it was hilarious and cute (which it was when he was 15 lbs), but I had to remind him that it would look much different at 45 lbs...LOL. I nipped that one in the bud...I happen to like my couch...

PS...I used to live in Phoenix...and boy, do I miss it!!!

Tell us about yourself: Hi, my name is Lindsey and I have a five year old boxer named Roo and a five month old DS named Eris. My girls are wonderful and Eris is beginning to learn her manners. Luckily I have an older, low energy dog to calm her down some! Love them, they are like my and my husband's kids!!

Hi,

Very funny post, these dogs are great for a laugh. Not always at the time when the behavior is happening but later yes. Great looking dog too but I was wondering...judging from the landscape do you happen to live in Arizona? I live in AZ so just curious.
