Hello from Ottawa
We picked up our very first Dutch Shepherd back in August and I'd been referencing this forum for training tips and advice for a while so decided to sign up and participate. Our DS (Logan) is from a KNPV line and was part of a breed of service dogs. Most of his brothers and sisters were taken by the US Marines with one dog going to the OPP. Logan and one of his brothers failed to qualify for their program so we happily adopted him from the breeder. We've been extremely impressed with both his intelligence and his drive. He's only 6 months old and he's already way better at fetch than my previous dogs when full grown (labrador retriever and beagle). I'm looking forward to getting him involved in more advanced training once he's done growing. Hopefully I'll be able to learn a lot more and make some contributions to the forum as well.

- Tell us about yourself: DS and Mal foster newly approved aug'12 by NADSR and ABMCR. high-functioning Autistic in nyc/hamptons in my 60's. Rescued the smartest dog i had ever seen off nyc street in 2000. Tracedog's intelligence exceeded by multiples my judgement that day. My first [and only as of 10/2012] dog turned out to be a DS, perhaps with a touch of something else, but attention to detail, behavioral traits, and physical habits, movement, and skill identical to DS. But MUCH more intellectual ability. supremely confident in all settings, fearless, very outgoing and social with people and friendly with dogs. Seldom apart in over 12 years, Trace Dog was the most important relationship of my adult life; he was my partner. Our dog is from a breeder near Lincoln, Ontario called Lead The Wolf Canine Training. They typically breed German Shepherds but they do occasionally breed Dutch Shepherds. I'll try to figure out how to post some pics

Does the pup like that Nylabone on the left (the knobby one with a green center)? None of my dogs were ever too keen on it...except to drop it on our toes. All the toys have names, and that one's the "bone crusher."

I can relate - he's crushed my toes with the nylabone a few times. He likes it and so do I because it's very durable. But he definitely prefers elk antlers and of course his kong especially if I've loaded it with some peanut butter or kibble.
