Hi

Found this forum as i have recently rescued a 5 month old dog who I was informed was a Galgo (a Spanish Greyhound). He was rescued in Spain so this made sense. However, having had an English Greyhound before I had my doubts on his breeding almost immediately!! I'm not worried, I mean, all we wanted was a nice family pet, and we certainly have that, but as he's grown I can't help thinking he's a Dutch Shepherd, hence discovering this forum!

So, what do you think, Dutchie or not? I know the pics aren't great, and he's a bit wet in the second one, it's hard to get him to stand still!! He's now 6 months and I think the pics make him look slightly taller than he is, he's 21.5 inches at the shoulder currently and 18.5 kg. If he is a Dutchie I'll be made up as he's really ace, brilliant dog.

WELCOME! and very great of you to rescue this wonderful dog.
definitely looks like a Dutch Shepherd to me. seems right size and look for age also. really adorable.

Thanks, he's a great dog and I'm really happy with our decision to give a home to a poor unwanted dog.

The only reason I question is he is a Dutchie is that his ears are ALL over the place. Sometimes they stand up, often they are down, and then sometimes they are on top of his head. Is there an age when I can say that if they are gonna stand up it permanantly it would have happened by now?

Looks like it to me. There is something with his hind end though, he stands far back. its like there were two spare legs hanging around and they stuck them on him.

He is great, congrats for both of you finding each other.

Looks like a DS, but the ears look different, more round and petally. It might just be them being wonky from teething though.

Lisa, I think it's just a bad angle and lanky puppiness that makes the rear look weird combined with a the fact that he's long in back. Elli is quite long and her rear can photograph weird too. Sometimes like the weiner dog slinky in toy story. It balances out as the dogs mature and get more muscle.

Thanks for all the replies. I think hisback legs are the angle he's standing and the bog of a field we were on - it's rained ALOT in England recently :(. Agree re his ears. One day they are uprightish, and the next much more floppy. What age will they be set for good?

Here's another pic with his floppy ears!!! Still looks like a DS to me? but you guys are the experts :)

Tell us about yourself: First Dutch owned. Was bought for my daughter and the family. Currently going through obedience classes. I am former military and currently working for a law enforcement agency. Have had labs most of my life and a friend introduced me to his Dutch and my family fell in love. Our current one is a female named pepper and is just now 3 months old. I would like to possibly train her for search and rescue

Tell us about yourself: My name is Heather. My husband and I are empty nesters in or mid 40. We bought a 8 wk old ds from a breeder. We got the name buy a new neighbor. I bought thr dog because we both just putvthe last of or 3 dogs down. I had a dalmatian before I met my husband 4 yeats ago. The love of my life. Iove dogs that are smart and full of energy. I lve hiking but need yhe push. I am just learning alot about the new little guy, but I need more info.

What a cute dog. Usually I don't answer these questions because I'm no expert but the ear thing. I never did anything with my dog's ears. I don't know if there supposed to be train the cartilage thing. My dog’s ears are all over the place they stand up when he wants. This way I know for sure what he's thinking or seeing or about to do. If he's just lobbing around his ears are up. His ears are down and back if he's scared or hiding behind me or if someone else has berated him and does know what to do. One up ear up and out means he's about to bolt etc.

Tell us about yourself: I am a long time dog enthusiast but first time Dutch Shepherd owner. Logan is a KNPV bred Dutch Shepherd and great grandson of the great Arko Kikkert. He's by far the most demanding dog I've ever had but also by far the most rewarding.

I dont remember when Sadies ears finnaly stood, 8 months maybe? They flopped all which ways, stood, fell, over here and over there, i did try to tape them, I used popiscle sticks and skin glue and didnt work. I would have to wait for her to be fully passed out before I did any gluing, she could smell the stuff a mile away. I wouldnt worry about them, they will eventually do something.

Tell us about yourself: I am a military working dog handler in the United States Air Force. My current working dog is a spunky old german shep named Ferra. But I have also had the pleasure of working with belgian mals while in this career field as well. I am the proud owner of two beautiful dutchies. One brindle male and female who are brother and sister from the same litter. They are currently five months old and I will never own another breed of dog after having these guys! They are wonderful, smart, loyal, alert, obedient *for the most part* lol and protective. Best dogs I have ever owned.

Well if you ask me he most definitely looks like a dutch shepherd. The same thing was happening with my dutchie's ears. Around 4 months they will go back down because of teething. It has something to do with the calcium being needed for that process. Try putting a big spoon of cottage cheese in his food and they should stand right up. It worked for our dog and a friend of ours as well. Only took about a week and a half. If the ears don't stand by 9 months then they probably never will.
