My name is Kevin I've just purchased a ds pup he was the only red or fawn whatever you want to call it out of the litter of 10. He has a very good drive seems to have a good temperament. I was wondering how common this is both parents were brindle? He is 9 weeks and weighs 17 pounds, this seems like a great forum and thanks for the add.

Re: New member from Tennessee
Welcome and congratulations and Happy New Year and...from where in Tennessee?
What made you decide on a the breed? What kinds of experiences do you have with working dogs?
You can search the threads using key words for the genetic info----there's tons on here. Probably an advanced search would work better: we're not strict about staying on-topic, so you can't gauge what's in a thread by the title.
Cute pup. More pics. We like pics. Reeeeaaaallllly like 'em.

Though I can only hope to become the person who my animals believe I am, the things that they have taught me have made me a better human being. ~~~Sharon~~~

I live in Hampshire, Tn. About 70 miles south of Nashville. I have had Akitas in the past also a German Shepherd, I was researching malinois and started researching dutch shepherds. I have a 13 year old daughter and thought the ds would be a better match for our family. Thanks for the add!

Re: New member from Tennessee
You got a Malinois. Yes they can be born from Dutchies, it's just a color variance for the most part but breeders generally tend to breed striped dogs to striped dogs and tan dogs to tan dogs. However you'll have both in most of the lines and the parents in your case threw a Mal. My female Asia came from a litter where most were striped and then four were tan- as her sire was a Dutch and the mother a Mal. Are there major differences? Not much other than color but some claim the Dutchies are larger in size. I own both so, while I could say my Malinois is a bit more on the crack head side with tons of energy- I have to remember my older Dutches were the same way when they were young. Typically though, two Dutchies won't produce a Mal but you'll have your hands full either way. Have fun.

Re: New member from Tennessee
Two dutches can produce a fawn colored dog, mostly called mal but in some cases I do believe there are fawn colored dutches - Kedavis if you search the forum there was some discussion about it over the years. Very interesting stuff. I know over on another forum a breeder of a notable line of DS was talking about it and it is very, very, very possible if the parents have the allele for fawn in their genetics.
BUT that is besides the point - welcome to the forum! We look forward the puppy pics (hint hint)!

Lol. Watch out for the towels. As soon as they realize where they are and that they're fun to whap around, you'll have to start hiding and rationing out the towels! But washed out milk jugs make some very awesome and fairly durable toys when they're young (and may save a few pairs of jeans).
