Tell us about yourself: New owner of a dutch puppy

New Owner

Post by Mac25 »

Wanted to introduce ourselves as we recently added a new member to our family. Shelby is a short hair female Dutch and is 9 weeks old. Close friend had the puppies which were from two Dutch Shepherds that come from police backgrounds. Fairly new to the shepherd arena only experience has been at work (Police). I have caught our work dogs but that is a far reach from training them, especially as puppies. I have searched for a book that lays out training from a puppy to an adult. I have found several books but nothing specific to Dutch Shepherds, as it seems they are very smart dogs. If anyone could direct me to a good book to train this little girl and myself it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

Based on much older posts on this forum, there's really not a lot of books available specific to the Dutch Shepherd. I think the only ones out there are in Dutch.

For me reading books was a means to equilibrium with my rescued DS (Radar). Unfortunately, I believe he could be so much more, so I would recommend going beyond the reading and contacting trainers or clubs for advice.

Here's the books I have read on training:

Der Schutzhund (Helmut Raiser) - Extreme end of training spectrum using positive punishment for these "special" types of dogs.

Training Dogs (Konrad Most)

Belgian Malinois - The complete guide (Robert Pollet) - there's a very small section on Dutch Shepherds in this book

Team Dog - Training the Navy Seal Way (Mike Ritland)

I've read a lot of stuff from Patricia McConnell.

There some other books I've read about aggression and behavioral adjustment, but hopefully you won't have to deal with that.

Thanks for the info, I was away for the weekend. I just want to make sure we can raise her right, these dogs are so smart but as their owners we tend to let them fail because we are not properly prepared. She is a young pup, I just want to get her started now with proper training. Thanks again.
