One Ear Up

Post by DSRoc »

This is my first real post other than a brief introduction, I couldn't find a similar question in other posts. My dog Dexter is almost 12 weeks old and he has had his left ear up since about 10 weeks. The right ear is still pretty floppy and only stands for a few seconds at a time, usually after his head is tilted. 99.9% of the time it is down. Should I be concerned about the right ear? The reason I ask is because most posts I find imply that they both are coming up at basically the same time. I know hes still young and I have plenty of time before I should be worried, I just cant recall reading anything about ears coming up separately with weeks in between. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't think I would be worried at only 12 weeks.

i think one of demons ears came up at about a 2 months old-ish, the other fully came up when he was over a year old, nothing to worry about:)

Max is 10 weeks and his ears change every day. These pictures were taken less than 24 hours apart. I've read that when they are done teething they will both stay up.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Yesterday Dexter turned 12 weeks old and his right ear went up periodically throughout the day. It was up for a good 35-40 minutes at one point. Today it's pretty much down except for when he's biting on a toy pretty hard. I'm glad the right ear finally showed some signs of life. Your responses also made me feel better about the situation.

So just an update here. Dexter turned 3 months old today, he's a lunatic but a lot of fun. A few days ago I woke up and both his ears were standing quite nicely, much to my surprise. Throughout the day the right one that was down for the past 3 weeks got stronger and the left one that was up for 3 weeks looked weaker. Now for the past 4-5 days the left has been completely down and pinned back while the right is up, so they did a switch. The left isn't even coming up when he bites something hard like the right one was when it was down. I'm expecting some weird behavior from his ears during teething but not this early. I know I might sound a little OCD, but it's driving me nuts. I see pictures of his litter mates and they've all had ears up since 8-9 weeks.

All of Xander's littermates had their ears up as well. He was just slow. I feel your concern as I was worried to. And everyone told me not to worry but I did anyway. Just when I finally gave up on standing ears they popped up and stayed. I knew I'd love him the same either way. Just be patient, it will happen sooner or later.
