ears standing

Post by cordeliandemon »

id just like to put this here incase anyone in the furture is worried about floppy ears and does a search.

i had fully accepted that one of demons ears were always going to be wonkey by the time he was about ten months and i was cool with it, but... *drum roll* THEY STAND PERFECTLY!
theyre both extremely tough, have full mobility and the cartilage is as thick or thicker than that of my malamutes ears (that are like that to prevent frostbite).

correlation doesn't equate to causation, but just in case here are some possibilities:
1.hes not neutered yet. im not sure about male dogs but i know for a fact if you leave a tom cat unfixed for over a year all the testosterone makes their skin become extremely thick and leathery to cope with future fights/attacks after reaching sexual maturity. the same may happen with dogs left longer before being neutered.
2. two months ago he started having a raw egg on his food once or more rarely twice a week.
3. too much exercise made him overly lean so hes been on a bovine fat supplement for a month and a half now. http://www.zooplus.ie/shop/dogs/supplem ... nce/139572
(this also REALLY helped with how much energy he was using up, he looks great)
4. now that hes got free range with koda hes amassed his own beaver dam of sticks. he collects the biggest ones he can find and leaves them in a big pile where he gnaws away for hours, so his jaw muscles are getting alot of exercise which help support the base of his ears aswell.

both ears finally stood permanently and didnt flop or bend anymore at 13 months.
im not sure what it was, but something made the cartilage in his ears very suddenly become so thick and solid, so theres hope for anyone with a floppy and big eared pup like mine.
but its still not the end of the world if it doesn't happen :)

As far as the body is concerned, doesn't the body consider it more important to concentrate its energy on first developing parts of the body that are more important than erect ears? This would help explain why each dog is different as to when the ears will stand.

Sadies ears stood at 7 to 8 months on their own, they will stand when they stand. and yes, each dog is different.

Obligatory photos of said ears are clearly in order. Or... as the interwebs likes to say "Pics or it didn't happen!"

Tell us about yourself: My family welcomed our first DSD 12/14. I have shown GSD's and APBT's in conformation, my goal is to have more of a working interest with our Dutchie. My husband and I have 4 young children, Kitsune adores them. Kitsune has begun IPO training, we hope to get her BH in 2016. We are in love with this breed and have plans to import a male pup soon.

I think maybe size of the dog and ears (heavy thick ears vs smaller thinner ears) play a big role too. Kitsune had her ears up around 5 weeks or so and they never fell. I got her at 7 weeks and they were already totally up for good. She is on the smaller side, as is her dam.

Tell us about yourself: I am Birdie and purchased my handsome man at a super young age for cheap because the breeder didn't want anyone to see him since he originally didn't look like a dutchie. I feel in love from the get-go. Luigi the Dutchie may be different with his dobby (Harry Potter reference) ears but I love his differences.

I got Luigi from a breeder that didn't want anyone knowing he came from them because his ears never stood. He had super floppy ears. I thoroughly enjoy them though. :)
