Welcome Alyssa.
Please take a moment to introduce yourself in the New Member Announcements thread. Tell us a little about yourself and your experience with dogs, why you are interested in a Dutch Shepherd, and your plans for the dog into the future.
I know other members will be chiming in soon, but you can do some searches on this site while you wait. I know there's a ton of posts on raw feeding, and you may want to read through a lot of the behavior posts.
If some of the behavior stories scare you a little, well they should. At their best, Dutch Shepherds are awesome dogs, but at their worst, they can be dangerous. Many of the members of this forum believe whole-heartedly that they should never be considered as pets. There are a few pet DS successes, however.
Your experience with GSDs will help a little, but you will be surprised how much more effort is needed for a DS. Make sure that you begin training immediately. If your not familiar with marker training and classical conditioning, start learning it now. Better yet, make sure you have access to a trainer experienced in this breed to guide you as well.
We're looking forward to seeing pictures of your new puppy.

- Tell us about yourself: Hi, I am retired, served in the USNavy, am married and we have an 8 month old DS and an 8 year old Chihuahua..They get along great. I read a lot of useful information in some posts about training. I always wanted a German shepherd and I wanted to name him Dutch then I met a DS that was a retired bomb dog and I fell in love with the breed. Thought the name was "original".
Re: I need tips!!!!!!!!
DutchHi, my husband and I are the proud parents of an 8 month old DS. We found that they do require extra training, discipline and attention, but it is well worth it. When we found the breeder, the 1st thing she asked was what we wanted the dog for and we didn't quite understand her question. Then we told her it would basically be a house pet and she said there was only one litter from which we could choose. She said his parents temperament, etc., was best for what we wanted. I'm so glad, because he is everything we could have hoped for, except he still is a lot of work. He gets along great with our 8 year old chichiuaua and has a very pleasant personality. Like I have been reading on his site, he did bond especially close with my husband, he can't make a move without him, but loves us all. Just have a bunch of rugged chew toys and freeze washcloths to give while teething. But start training early. We are having a hard time keeping him from jumping on people w when they come to our house. He gets so excited so we are working on that now. And he did chew a corner of my end table, 2 dog beds and my kitchen carpets, but they are just things. Thankfully that stage has passed. Sorry, I could go on and on with how great he is, but you will soon see why. Good luck and enjoy, I will post a pic once I figure out how!
