I suggest a S&W .38 special. Pepper spray is great, as long as you don't get hit with backmist and end up incapacitated while you are trying to fight off an attack.

I carry pepper spray as well, and have a baton. I figure if I ever need it, I can deal with the legal ramifications later. But I never thought of those things as defense against other dogs.

Recently we were charged by a Great Pyrenees. I had a taser with me and grabbed it quick. I never had to use it, but the dog was highly reactive to the cracking noise it makes when you press the button and turned in its tracks. My dogs must be used to it, but I have now "tested" other dogs reaction to the static noise and all of the dogs have bailed. I kinda liked the knowledge I got from that, and now it goes with me everywhere.

Guess what happens when you shock a dog that is biting you? Carry a gun. Seriously.
