My name

I asked Eric to change my forum name in my true name which is
Jan. When I joined the forum I choose a nickname because I thought there were more Jan-named members but so far I haven't seen any post. And since
Jan is a rather unique name in Holland I decided to use it here as well. Thanks Eric.

Is it really unique in Holland? I am descended from a Dutch Pirate, Jan Janszoon van Haarlem. But that was in the 1500-1600s.

He left the country and moved to the Republic of Salé, and converted to Muslim, but he was originally Dutch.
I believe it is pronounced Yan. My breeder's name is Janet. But she said it was okay if I called her Janet.

Just kidding. Jan (pronounced as Yan indeed) is very, very common here. When you call this name in a meeting many guys will answer you I'm afraid.

Your breeder?

Or your dogs breeder?

(okay, sorry. I could not resist)
Jan is right. It is the Dutch version of Joe. Not-so-rare.

As in Paul Simon's song: you can call me Joe.

Judith - I thought it was the equivalent of John...
I have multiple Jan's in my family!
When my brother was born my parents initially name him Jan. The hospital staff informed them that in the US it is predominantly a female name and they changed it to John.

Yes, you are right Eric. It IS the equivalent of Jan. And now that you mention that, John is probably more prevalent than Joe. I was trying to find a common male name though, but you are right. I should have picked John which is the equivalent.
I think many people in Holland would be very surprised to hear that Jan is a mostly female name over here.
