My partner has just upped the bar for me for christmas by getting me..

Allemaal Hollanders!

I may not understand the dutch yet, but I've been enjoying looking through at the pictures and seeing some dogs I recognise.. even saw Ivil and Dingo in there The sections on nest registrations and dogs qualifying for championships etc was all very interesting and I'm sure that it will help in our search for a puppy. Damn though, my partner knows how to give me a challenge! I'm so keen to get reading the book as I can tell it's just brimming with information, but my Dutch is far from good enough to even read the opening page without help. I will get there though! Just looking at it does make me despair at how long it's going to be before I can really read the whole thing

He also bought me my first bite sleeve aswell, so again something i have to learn and work up to, but I do love a challenge, I've been spoilt this year

What a tease! I have not seen the newer version of the book yet, but I assume it does not deviate too much from my old edition. If you urgently need help with some translation, just ask. There are some "hollanders" on the list.

So, excuse my total ignorance here, but is that a book he got you?

Judith I may end up taking you up on that offer because it is by far the ultimate tease! Its really nice though, A4, hardback, I saw quite a few names of dogs I've seen around the net and in a few available pedigrees. Would be nice to actually read about them though lol

Wow, what an awesome gift I bet it has beautiful pictures in it, that you can at least look at while you figure out the dutch part lol

Ask away Violet. I followed a link from my website the other day, and ended up in Russia.. Talk about frustrating, I had no idea how my link ended up there, and I had no way of learning, since I don't read or speak Russian, and I don't know anyone who does. So I bet I know how you feel.

I LOVE google translate I am on a French forum and understand stuff without knowing more than 50 words of French

On the book, most pictures are used to illustrate the text, so the text is not directly about those dogs, it might be about the shape of the skull, or coat colour, and they use a good picture to illustrate it.
There are more books about the DS in Dutch, but all of them are pretty old and hard to find. I have almost all of them, one I still never got, it's pretty rare. And when it finally was for sale somewhere my friend Ron had just bought it before me But my time will come...

On translating, I'm willing to help too, but like I said, google translate is pretty helpfull too!

I use a google toolbar that translates; from the "page" button--it drops down to an option that says Google Translate. Very helpful for the internet pages.

Oh I am envious, would love to see books on the DS. How many are there actually, does anyone know or have a list? Marj?

google translate.. hmm. I've tried that for some Dutch before and it doesn't always make sense, even gets a few words mixed up and can lead to some very dodgy meanings.. given me a good laugh at times though. Annoying thing is, I could just ask my partner, but he wants me to learn.. EVIL I tell you lol

Didn't think of google translate though Marjolein so I'll have to give that a go thanks, though I feel like I'd be cheating a bit, at least the FCI breed standard is in English

It's not cheating, actually, I learned a lot by using it, because, like you said, it does not always translate correctly, so you'll have to use common sense and some puzzling to figure it out. You will never forget those words you had to look up again and again
If you think something is wrong or odd, you can ask here, and you will learn to understand the language much faster.

I just call it worm medicine. (as if you're making the worms better ) Stopped long ago and use DE now.

Diatomaceous Earth, it's a natural wormer, lots of folks here use it-- but only Codex Food Grade is to be used internally.

One of my pet peeves is when people say they are going to "worm their dog (or horse)." I prefer to DEworm my animals

de-worming.. ah the joys. I remember trying to help Seren's breeder with seren's mum's litter. 14 puppies all having to be given bright pink worming fluid.., very sticky and very messy, but lots of fun

It's like de-fleaing (is that a word too??) people say i'm going give my dog medici for fleas.... I prefer stuff against the fleas
