Nice weather in Oklahoma :)

Post by kchristy »

The temp was in the high 50s today so I decided to keep the dogs outside playing all day. :D We played around in the yard a little while, then went for a walk. During this walk, I learned a man down the road has turkeys. I also learned that Merlin really would love to eat a turkey! As he was barking like a crazy beast, the turkey decides to taunt him repeatedly. I finally got him in a sit on the side of the road and made him focus. He was fine then. My son and I also learned on this walk, that we are proud owners of a coyote. This person, who had a friend, who had a friend that had a dog just like mine and it was "pure" coyote. I of course wasn't going to say anything, but nooo my 4 year old son could not let it slide that this man just called his DS a coyote. My son decides to go off in a rant about how this is not a coyote. He is a DUTCH shepherd. At this point the man kind of chuckles and Thomas (my son) goes, "Kinda like a German Shepherd, but not." Then he tells the guy he has seen coyotes in his book before and that Merlin looked nothing like one. At this point Merlin, probably insulted this man called him a coyote, decides that it would be the smart thing to start getting annoyed and let the hair raise up on the back of his neck. Finally we get away from this maniac and continue our walk home. Merlin did well walking around the neighborhood as long as there are no turkeys or weirdos to distract him. I'm thinking I'm just out of luck on the last one. :?

Here are some pictures though that I took today. My son never would sit still, but I was able to get the other 2 :) I tie a really long rope to Merlin, just incase he gets the urge to chase something and to help with enforcing the come command. He decided to take Chewie for a walk with it. The picture where they look really focused a cat decided it wanted to walk out of the woods and play. Not a good idea, it ended very quickly with the cat going back into the woods. :player:

Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.

Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!

I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences.

Oh, how cute! He is so big now! Man, they grow fast, eh?

Funny how people can be so opinionated on the type of dog we have. Makes me laugh. Good for your 4 yr old!

Love the tug-of-war shot. The chu's all "here-take-that" and brindle is "yeah, okay, you're cute, whatever, I could fling you to China."

Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.
Can't wait for all the snow to get gone! Spring is coming too slow this year!

What a exciting day for Merlin! Love hearing of your son's "explaining things" about the coyote, sticking up for his pup! Nice photos, he's becoming quite handsome and Chewie is adorable.

Thank you all :) Its amazing how fast my son has picked up on what breed he is. I think he finds it insulting when other people try to say he is something that he isn't. Specially since the coyotes around here aren't pretty at all. The funny thing is even though he is right people look at him as though he is crazy lol My sisters, sister-in-law was at my moms from Christmas and said wow that is a pretty GSD. Thomas blurted right in and said its a Dutch Shepherd, she laughed and told him that he was really smart. So I think thats what may have started him giving everyone the lessons. Merlin is growing so fast though, he is stubborn as heck but it learning. I thank goodness for Chewie because he will just play and play with Merlin until they both fall over asleep.
Its funny though because Raven said something about flinging him to China, there was one point where Chewie would not let go of the rope and Merlin was in a full out run. It was soooo funny, but I had to stop Merlin from running because Chewie was just starting to drag lol
Merlin is finally starting to open up and be himself. I think he was so mistreated before he just figured it would happen again. Most of the time when he is in the house he is laying on his back up against the door. Hes so funny, I can't imagine not having him now. Sweet little monster :) Other then obedience I think Im going to start teaching him some scent work. Just for fun and as an outlet. He loves to track deer in our yard so I think he would have fun.

A nice bonus of tracking is that it tires their little Dutch a**es out.

Merlin and Chewie are great friends, my in-laws were afraid for Chewie when we first got Merlin. Chewie is small, but he thinks he is a large dog, he has no problem biting his way up Merlins back to let him know when he doesnt want to do something. I could watch them play all day and find it so entertaining. When there is a strange dog in the yard, Chewie does all the barking and Merlin does all the scaring. They are the perfect backup for each other :)
