how much water is normal for a dog to drink? Odin drinks like there is no tomorrow and then urinates the same way. I noticed that he licks his lips alot with his tongue, like his mouth is really dry.
He goes to the vet next week for a check up, so I will bring a urine sample, but in meantime is this normal? My husband and I think it is excessive, since Dakota does not drink like that.
BTW, i wish there was a spell check gadget on this site - just saying. I am a terrible speller.

I could be a sign of a problem, but my female will sit at the water bowl and drink it dry if I don't remind her that other dogs live here, too. I think she's just OCD at everything.

As Carol said, it could be an OCD, almost bored thing. But in his case, it could also be a stress thing while he is settling in. So I wouldn't over think it just yet.

Is a cat or toy(s) in view when he starts licking his chops? Just kiddin'. Kinda. My last two licked their lips at the sight of possible prey--or a squeeky toy.
My Thor drinks like he's an honorary member of the old Rat Pack. So, hopefully with Odin it's just a temporary response or his own preference.

thanks guys - i was thinking it was stress related too. Poor guy has been through so much.
LOL - let's hope he doesn't lick his chops when he sees the cats. We are working with him on the cats. He sees Dakota interact with them in a gentle way and watches us pet them while he is on a leash.

Good luck with the cats! I am working on getting my 3 used to my DS too. I really believe it can happen. Some day I am going to take and post pictures of my tiny female siamese with Xena. She has decided that it is her job to love up Xena and correct any untoward behavior. oh my.
As for the water, Xena also drank incredible amounts when she first arrived??? We finally had to start limiting it. And when Xena is working for a treat without my asking she will lick her lips to tell me what she is aiming for... They are so darn smart!
