Tell us about yourself: Hi.....my name is Angela. I have 2 daughters and 1 granddaughter. All of my dogs (and cats) are rescues. I have a puppy that we just adopted that I think could be at least part Dutch Shepherd. We also have a 2 year old pug/min pin mix and an 11 year old border collie and possible lab mix.

Time for me to decide....

Post by roxanne »

I am filling out the paperwork for Roxie's first obedience class. They want to know her breed. Does she look enough like a shepherd to qualify as a shepherd mix? :duh: I am at a loss for what to put down on the paper!

It is just OB class, right? You are not applying for a pedigree? ;)
So no harm done, just fill out what you perceive her as. I have seen a man with, I swear to God, a yellow lab, and he was telling everyone it was a wolf hybrid. The breeder had told him it was a wolf hybrid and by golly, that is what he was going to call it. A DS label for your Roxie would be a lot less impossible, so I say go for it, especially since you plan to add the 'mix' part.

Thanks...I know she is a mix, so I will definately add it. I just didn't want to tell tales on the forms! Shelter said lab mix. I just don't see lab in her. Never did.

I've seen some dogs that have been called something totally different than what they obviously are. My friend has a dog that's supposedly a wolf hybrid. It's more than likely a husky/shiba inu mix.

Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.

Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!

I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences.

You know what, I think if you see DS in how she acts, she looks enough like a DS mix to me that I'm sure it won't be a problem. I'm sure they just want to know for breed traits/size, etc. And I've seen lots of dogs that are labeled as all kinds of things that didn't fit...unless you know for sure who the parents are, its going to be a best guess anyway.

Just a warning, if you get to pick, I wouldn't put "shepherd". Some insurance companies and housing rentals don't allow shepherds.

I had a GSD for 11 years before I got this puppy. I'm not worried about insurance and I own my house. Besides, this is for obedience class. For insurance and dog license, I'll probably stick with the lab mix ID that the shelter gave her.
