After complaining for two months at our apartment complex management about the tenants behind my apartment (4 in the front/4 in the back) and their pit bull being tied up outside (no pit bulls or mixes allowed), Marco and I got attacked by it.

I came home during my lunch hour to walk the dogs, first Jerry than Marco. When I was out with Marco, the pit was tied up outside, and the tenant smoking a cigarette. When the pit saw us, he lunged and somehow broke loose. The tenant blocked his way so he couldn't run straight along the width of the building to us. But the dog ran all the way along the lenght of the building and around to get us.

Since my Jerry got attacked by a pit two years ago, same property, I carry pepperspray and since those tenants moved in, I have it "drawn" all the time. Thanks god for it. I would have been too nervous to fumble around and get it out. When the pit came charging at us, I gave him a good spray, he backed off but tried it again and I gave him another good spritz, by that time the owner came running around the building and tried to catch it, no control whatsoever and the dog kept barryling down North to the third section of our complex.

Then they had the nerve to complain at the management that I sprayed their dog! But the management told them it was their fault and I just tried to defend myself. Morons! They presented a letter from a vet, saying it's a Labrador mix, so the management says they can't do anything. Labrador my a%%! At this point it shouldn't even matter if it is a Labradoodle, Golden Retriever or whatever, it is a dangerous dog and it needs to be removed.

That's it, we are moving, I already found two places that would take me and the dogs.

So, whoever wonders if pepperspray works. IT DOES!!! I bought it at Gander Mountain for $9.99.

And on another note, I probably collected some browny points as pack leader with Marco since I demonstrated that I can keep the pack safe.!

Wow! Glad you guys ended up safe...way to go pack leader!! That would have been quite another story if you didn't have the pepper spray handy. Holy crap! That is quite the scare!

They have to allow a dangerous dog on their property? Should have nothing to do with the breed! Happy you are both safe!

Exactly! It's just a lame excuse of these lazy %*&()&^%%. That why I decided to move, even if I didn't plan on it and have to brake the lease.

Oh, just try to send your lawyers to collect the remaining term of the lease!I I will rip them to peaces in court! I have a well kept paper trail documenting my complaints. :samurai:

It works some/most of the time. Not meaning to bust your bubble, but depending on the dog, it may or may not work sufficiently. It slows them down, but if you keep standing where you just sprayed, it would slow the one who just used it down as well. I have seen law enforcement grade spray used, and while the outright attack was curbed, the dog did not back off totally. It will not drop a dog like a does many a person, but yes, it most likely creates enough room to get out of there anyway.

Wow that was really intense! Im glad you guys got out safe.
But on the other hand, im surprised peppers spray worked. Pain tolerance (especially in pit bulls) + drive + stress + fact that dogs dont really need eyes as much as we do..do the math

i have one in my drawer and i think ill put it in my doggie-walking-bag, just in case (Concerning my luck, its prolly bacon flavored )

wow i went walking with my DS today and i have pepper spray in my drawer that i put on my belt, i ended up taking it off thinking i didn't need it i think it will go with me from now on. i'm glad your both ok

True, true. But it is not just eyes that get affected. It works on your respiratory system too, and most dogs still need that to remain standing.
With that being said. We did a police training once, sending dogs through a tear gas filled room. Handlers needed masks, but the dogs? Nothing! The all worked as usual.

Did you check the label?

Pepperspray is nasty crap.. if you're lucky enough to get it in the dogs eyes there is no way he will attack because in a few minutes his eyes are going to be shut from the chemical burn. You would have to have really good aim, which 90% of the time it's not the case. Sometimes just the smell does it though, typical skunk defense

great. What am I supoosed to do on a continent that forbids even owning a can of pepperspray Stand tall helps a lot....and we've never met the "crazy" type so far...

Wow, that is scarey! And once one latches on to your dog, almost no getting them lose. Glad you were both ok.

So, question now, what DOES work on a dog as a distant deterrant. Hubby has a LE taser. Hummmm.....? Seriously though, ideas? What works?

I usually carry my herding stick when walking through the woods but in our neighborhood dont have to worry as there is a strict leash law and most of the dogs are harmless.

I just don't understand how people let their animals get to that point. Humans drive me CRAZY.

The stuff Gander Mountain sells states on the package that it is law enforcement strenght and used by NY law enforcement. And it has UV dye. Now they are glowing in the dark

Another detail to watch out for, be sure you are standing up wind NOT down wind.

I'm very happy to hear the pepper spray worked! I have been carrying it ever since we were chased to our doorstep a year ago by a loose neighborhood dog who was insanely aggressive. It's unfortunate that people can get just about any breed put on their veterinary paperwork, but with such irresponsible owners it probably doesn't matter what breed it is anyway if they can't socialize and train the dog. Pits are banned where we live as well but I have seen plenty of them and never had a problem, the dogs that have tried to attack us have been a German Shepherd and a Malamute.

Its the people to blame more then the dog in most cases. I have a friend with a staffy-lab but you don't see any lab in him. He is the sweetest guy ever!
