Odin has earned the right and has proven to us that he does not need to be crated at bedtime anymore!!!
He now sleeps in our bedroom in front of the bed.
Now, with 4 cats that are always on the prowl (on and off the bed all night - such a pain) he does not move once he is settled in and will not get up in the morning until told to - awesome!!

What a good boy! you are doing such a great job with him. Can you believe that you used to have to have him on lead because he would go for the cats???

You know what, its been over 1.5 years since we got Sugar, and its just NOW that they can co-exist. Although, if my cat didn't move out to the next door neighbours after Sugar moved in, it probably would have gone faster...but he does come back to visit from time to time...

Can you tell us how you trained him to stay in his bed until you tell him he can get up? Would love to know! Thanks

All I know is if he got up and came to either side of our bed we totally ignored him and told him to go lie down - each and every time and if he ventured out of the room we called him back and again told him to lie down. Not sure if that qualifies as training?

We have 2 dogs and the only time they are allowed out of bed in the morning is if it is an emergency to go to the bathroom You'll know, cause it's a different type of waking up mom.

Like Barb said, just ignore. I didnt really do any training with Sadie either to stay in (her) bed all night. In the morning though, if I even twitch she is jumping on the bed to say HI. But just ignore and tell them to go lay down and soon they will learn.

...And you did it just right! What you allow, you train. Not reinforcing him for getting up and praising him for staying where he belongs worked very well.

You can also use your "place" command for this kind of thing...in our case, it's "rug." So, any dog bed or ruggy kind of thing is called a rug, including Geyser's mattress bed thing, and you just say, "go rug," as long as you've trained it to mean "stay there until released." You remind them if they get up without permission, etc.

This kind of stuff works well, too, if you don't want your dog telling you when it's time to get up. My rule is I determine when it's time to get up, period. When my spousal unit gets up, he then tells Geyser she can get up on the bed with me, and she'll touch my face once then lie down and go back to sleep, and doesn't even think about messing with me until I wake up and stretch and invite her over. Then it's all that happy good morning petting stuff
