Finally our master trainer's schedule opened up and Odin will start his bite work next week for a protection dog. We trust this person alot and love the way he works Odin. Entirely positive re-enforcement and Odin responds really well with him. I will post updates on his journey.

I did try another trainer several times with Odin, but my husband and I did not like his style and after speaking in length to Christie at dog camp, she "helped" us see he was not the right trainer even though our gut feelings were telling us something was off. So, thanks Christie!!

What is PSA?

Protection Sports Association. Its a scenario based suit bite sport. http://www.psak9.org. If you search for youtube videos, you can get a jist for what its all about. Its the sport that I grew up in and I love the test of the dog and the concept of it...but I am playing in other venues now as well.

we do ipo, bran bites on the sleeve. But i try the costume of mondioring and he's very excited, so he bites the costume on the leg. Rembrandt has a powerful bite, extremely hard, he just loves it!

With Eli saying that she does sleeve work (mostly) I wonder what Odin will be doing? Sleeve or suit?

I believe it is PP. Not sure if it will be sleeve or suit. We did discover though that Odin's tug and ball drive was never developed (basically has none) so we will have to work on that and make it a really really fun game for him. Well, the trainer will.

Pls clarify "is he suited for it"?

Does Odin possess the traits to be successful in personal protection? Has he been temperament tested? (Which will give a good indicator, but isn't pass/fail by any means)

There is a world of difference between "bite sport" dogs, and personal protection dogs. Personal protection dogs MUST have specific characteristics to be effective "in the field". Most people don't need a personal protection dog ( You may be one of the ones that do, I really don't know). You can teach many different dogs to bite a sleeve or a suit. There are few that have the character qualities to protect you properly, and be under control.

If you'd like, PM me your personal email address, and I can put you in contact with a retired nationally known PPD expert that could give you some sage wisdom, much more so then myself.

They didn't ask for advise just announced they are happy to finally get time with the trainer they like. They already got advise from Christie who knows the dog personally.

This is Barbara and Mark's first bitework dog, so I am sure they are not familiar with nuances of terminlogy. I believe they are primarily looking for an activity for themselves and Odin to participate in. I don't think they will ne doing defensive PP work. It will be equipment based and focusing on drive building and then control in drive. If they choose to participate in sport later kg will be based on his potential.

Thanks Christie for explaining, because I was getting very confused . However, those are excellent questions that I will talk to our trainer about. I am not experienced enough to speak intelligently about them. We have alot of trust in our trainer who has tons of this kind of experience and he is just beginning to work with Odin. He likes what he sees thus far, ie: temperament, intelligence, etc. But, having said that, he will know more once he gets to the point of really pushing him. Right now, he is building a bond and trust with Odin while working him on OB. Oh, and he does not do the bitework - his bitework person does.

I am learning as I go, so I really appreciate questions that can educate me along the way!!
