- Tell us about yourself: Hi.....my name is Angela. I have 2 daughters and 1 granddaughter. All of my dogs (and cats) are rescues. I have a puppy that we just adopted that I think could be at least part Dutch Shepherd. We also have a 2 year old pug/min pin mix and an 11 year old border collie and possible lab mix.
How sad is this?
The dog was actually a GSD, but it's just unbelievable. A police dog was left in the cruiser on a hot day. No AC was on for him and he passed away. Sadly, this isn't the first time that has happened. They lost another one 3 years ago the same way from what I've heard. Just a small reminder that no dog is immune to the effects of being left in a hot car....hopefully people will learn from this and not leave dogs in cars.

So sad!! I also remember hearing that the ac was left on for a dog ( in a cruiser) and the ac broke ! Luckily though the officer returned to the car in time.

Very sad...
Last year I attended a dogshow, the biggest one in europe, it was held in Holland that year, while we were inside in the cool hall, outside it was pretty warm and very sunny. Can you believe these supposed dog -lovers attending the show, left lots of dogs in the cars! During teh show they announced that some people had to come to their cars NOW. Some did, some didn't, the police and animal services have knocked out several car windows to save dogs, but some didn't make it
For a stupid dog show!!
That pisses me off!
This officer, well, he must have been so sure the AC was on, I'm sure he never wanted this to happen, but it shows once more to be aware of how quick a car turns into an oven!

Well, I remember that we were giving a class one year. It was not summer, but it's often hot in Texas anyway. The cruiser had a heat alarm, but the dog shut the officer out, and he could not get in the car to reach the dog. We called a locksmith (the engine was on, alarm not going off) who would take 30 minutes to get there. The local sheriffs office would have slim jim's that could open the cruiser as well, but they said they were not going to help (!!!!!...a fellow department....) and to call the locksmith. We were livid. Those were a long 30 minutes. The dog was fine, and we would have broken a window out if the alarm had gone off, but it was nerve wrecking. Even with AC's, (or AC's plus alarms) we still tend to worry. What if (they fail) ;(

After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.

- Tell us about yourself: I was introduced to the Dutch Shepherd breed during my time as an Army veterinary technician working with Military Working Dogs. I fell in love with the breed and by pure chance happened to meet a DS in a local rescue who was a police K9 washout and was up for adoption. We adopted Zodiac right away and she has been an important part of our family ever since. We currently compete in Rally-Obedience and participate in Agility.

So sad
Our base had an incident one year on a hot summer day where two military working dogs had been left in a hot car for 2 hours by a dog handler. The dogs were in bad shape and we had to rush over to the kennel and render emergency care, thankfully both dogs survived but it is infuriating that people who have so much training on dog care and safety can make a mistake like that.

True. But I have seen the onset of heat stroke once, in Holland actually, while at work, not in a vehicle. The dog just swayed and staggered and for some reason, me and another handler figured what was wrong and rushed the dog to the sprinklers on a nearby field, since our own training field had no running water. Long story short though: It tends to go wrong in a hurry. The above dog recovered, but always stayed heat sensitive after that. Just be smart in hot weather. It really happens fast.ZodiacT wrote:So sadOur base had an incident one year on a hot summer day where two military working dogs had been left in a hot car for 2 hours by a dog handler. We have no Police Dept. and the one animal control officer is basically worthless. Very small town here.Dutchringgirl wrote:alspyce wrote:

Re: How sad is this?
Regardless of how fast it can happen the handler on our base should have known better than to leave the two dogs in the car in the first place, especially since we on the vet side gave the handlers training on heat-related injuries and safety every year before the weather got warm. Some people just shouldn't be trusted with such important canines.vneerland wrote:True. But I have seen the onset of heat stroke once, in Holland actually, while at work, not in a vehicle. Re: How sad is this?
I have recently been on the opposite side of the coin twice.
A few weeks ago I ran into a store, leaving the van running with the AC blasting. I came out to a police car at my van and a very irate woman. She proceeded to berate me while the officer looked really uncomfortable. I finally just got in the car and said that my dogs were significantly more comfortable than any of us were having the heated discussion. And that was very true. A comfy 68 degrees
Then Monday, I stopped by my sister's work on a 72 degree day and ran inside to drop off my nephew. Car in the shade, completely overcast sky, so I left the windows open and the tailgate up. Came out a few minutes later to a cruiser parked by the van and an officer firing up my dogs (not intentionally- just staring at them under the tailgate). He appoligized and said someone called and said the dogs were locked in the car all day with no ventilation. He followed it with "But they only called 2 minutes ago and I see the doors and windows are open." I smiled and asked him if he needed to examine any of them. He said he could see them just fine in the crates
Then he asked what they were...which led him to knowing a few of my dogs on departments up there. I should thank the lady for making me a new contact in LE.
I know these horrible stories occur every year and make people really sensitive. I have even called the police. But sometimes common sense should play a tiny role in people's actions.

Re: How sad is this?
I do that all the time in the summer; park my car in as much shade as I can find (which often is zero), open all the windows, and open the tailgate, against which Geyser's wire crate is placed. Use sunshades over the windshield (and even towles over one side of the SUV, if the sun is on that side of the vehicle), and she's fine. If it's 97 out, I leave her home (much to her amazement).
I wouldn't trust the AC. What if it went out for some weird reason? But that's just me...
But I get steamed up when others leave dogs in their vehicles without the AC on or windows down, something. It's one of the few times I actually get pushy with strangers
