This is my new pup. The breeder said he was full Dutch Shepherd but I took him from a pretty bad situation and I wouldn't be surprised if she was lying. She sold his mom when he was 5 weeks and had us come pick him up. He's doing better now with proper food and playing well with our other pup who is a 10 week old Border Collie.

I don't think I could call that woman a "breeder;" for her to sell the mom when the pups are only 5 weeks old is a travesty.

Have you named your puppy yet? It's good you have another puppy for this one to play with, for socialization purposes (why you don't take 5 week old pups from their littermates...grrrrr), but man, raising to young puppies at once is a BIG job!

breeder *cough*. He is so cute !!! Yes, you have your hands full with two pups but I am sure they will be so happy together. Im sure he will have the best life with you.

Our two pups are getting along pretty well so far. This guy's name is Ronin and he just got dewormed yesterday. Poor little guy had horrible diarrhea with blood in it so hopefully it will fix that problem. He seems a little more active and has more of an appetite already with no blood we can see at this point so we're a relieved.

Whatever he ends up being, he's a cute lovable pup now. I think I'd be tempted to report "breeder to local Humane society. Don't know local laws where you are, but here it's illegal to sell a pup younger than 8 weeks. ( may be able to sell, but not give pup to new owner until 8 wks, havn't read actual wording of law.) And if puppy was that sick as well, .....

Holy Cannoli! A DS and a Border Collie puppy crew? If you're not in shape now, you will be ready for a triathlon in a few short months.

As for the "breeder" all I gotta say is her folks shouldn't have been allowed to....

If that keeps up, have him checked for Coccidea. Causes diarrhea with blood, as well as other symptoms. Regular wormer won't take care of iy . But hopefully it is just worms.: ) he's an adorable puppy!

I agree. the intestinal problem sounds more bacterial. giardia is very common and will turn stool bloody when left untreated long enough. also, negative tests can occur even when infection is present, so beware.
and importantly, these bacterial infections wax and wane in severity; it does not indicate any improvement -- only total eradication will do that. so this sounds serious, tho probably easy to fix; should be fixed soon before it spreads outside the gastro-intestinal tract -- and PUP will feel and act SO MUCH better when it is gone.

also need to protect other pup from contamination since it spreads so easily; need to watch for signs it has spread so both are well at same time.

Thanks for all the tips guys! He's acting a little better already and he's pooped out some worms so that was a relief, as did our Border Collie which surprised us, but I suppose that's why you are supposed to worm all your dogs lol. He'll be having a vet visit as soon as I get my paycheck and hopefully he wont have anything too horrid.

I don't know the laws where the lady lived, she was out in the middle of nowhere and it was almost a 2 hour drive for us. I'm just glad him and the mom dog are out of that horrible situation. She was weaning him on adult dog food from dollar general. -_- Such a tragedy. The mother was a beautiful Dutch Shepherd though and I'm sure she's happy to be out of there too!

How are the puppies?

I was concerned at the bloody stool as that can be a sign of parvovirus. It wouldn't surprise me if this breeder skipped vaccinations and if she did, the mother might not have passed on any immunity for parvovirus. I'm not sure how long maturnal immunity lasts in dogs. In some animals it's done by two or three months.

Also, for those who don't know, all puppies are born with worms. They lay dormant in the mother's tissue and pregnancy hormones trigger them to migrate on a specific day of gestation. They migrate across the placenta and into the puppies. Some will go dormant to continue the cycle and some will mature into a worm infestation in the pup.

My pup is now 13 weeks old and quite active and healthy. He's up to date on all his vaccinations and has been wormed twice. Not only does he have healthy bowel movements he's almost potty trained! No accidents in 3 days lol. He's getting really big, really fast. I'll have to upload his new mug shot soon He's starting to look more and more like a dutch shepherd, his ears are starting to perk up. I don't know what age is normal for them to stand on their own but I think they're trying. He's about to catch up to our border collie in size
