Last week I was at the gas station getting fuel for my truck, my girls and kids were in the truck too as always. Since it is Diesel, I leave it running while fueling. A friend of mine and her hubby pulled up behind me to say hi ! As we were chatting, another gentleman who was also fueling up, said its a good idea to shut off the truck, I said, Oh Its deisel so I dont worry about it, so he said, " its a good idea anyway, Ill turn it off for you", Just as I was turning and the words " I dont think you want to do that !!!" were leaving my mouth, He opened my drivers door to reach in, well......................you know what happened next. LOL. He jumped back so fast he almost fell over. I giggled and said " You really didnt want to do that," He looked at me and said " ill let you turn it off"

Totally picturing it! WOW, I bet he'll never reach into anyone's auto without permission again!! Weird

Helpful fool. That scenario could've gone bad quickly with other dogs.

A stranger knocked on my door one day and when I opened the inside door, he immediately reached to open the screen door. (Nervy!) I said, "You don't want to open that door" as I opened the inside door wide enough for him to see Thor beside me...sitting...patiently...waiting.... Stranger gone.

The mental picture I have of that story is awesome... And I love your line...

I really wish you had a video of that. One weekend my mom was dog sitting Odin and went to the gas station with him. After she pumped gas and went to go inside she told Odin "watch my purse." The guy at the pump next to her said "ma'am I don't think it's a good idea to tell your kid to watch your purse." She just smiled and said "oh I think he can handle it." The look on that guy's face when he saw her "kid".

i have a somewhat similar story, but i think [?] more strange in multiple ways. but gas station guy and screen door guy had infuriating gull. is your gut feel that screen door guy was up to no good?

a couple months ago, i was parallel parking on the main shopping street of a local village [ in front of the museum to check out the sunday farmers' market in the museum's garden ]. all 3 dogs were in the car and it was still warm enough so the windows were all down. as i was backing/maneuvering into the space [ which is always awkward enough ] a passing elderly couple came off the sidewalk, INTO the street next to my backward moving car, and [one of them] shoved their upper body through the back window to EMBRACE [ like a HUG !!] Xander [ and again -- AS THE CAR WAS STILL MOVING!! ]

i slammed on the brakes and jumped out of my partially-parked car as this had set off dog chaos in the car - not to mention that i had a 70 or 80-something person hanging through my back window. once the danger of a moving car stopped, i was afraid the dog[s] would make a run for it through the window i could not raise because it had a person IN it. i wound up getting a 75$ ticket in no time flat for how my car was positioned. [ the police there ''downtown'' are absolute sticklers for ORDER and rules and are omnipresent.]

the good thing was XANDER proved again what i already knew - that he is an impossibly and improbably friendly DS. his love for all people and all dogs knows no bounds. he even hugs back. sudden, jerky embraces from strange children rushing at him on the street do not even cause a twitch; he just gently settles INTO the embrace and reciprocates.

so aside from my ticket, all worked out fine. i was so touched that these people were so moved by Xander's countenance to do such an outrageous thing!!! they said they just could not help themselves - apparently eyes had mutually locked while i was oblivious to all except my driving responsibilities. i had each dog meet the couple --- on the sidewalk; then i and the husband and wife each took one dog/leash and went for a walk. still though a very strange thing - and winding up with an old couple i did not know walking my dogs down main street.

What a story!!

Geeeeeez, John! So many dreadful things could have happened all at once. Nice ending, though. Whew.

Thor was never socialized with children, and by the time I got him, I wasn't about to risk trying. So one day the husband loaded Thor up in the truck to come to the zoo to say hello while I was work. It was summer and crazy-busy but he pulled up out back; Thor was in the quad-cab with the window a few inches down. JUST as the truck stopped, a squadron of screaming, happy little zoo camp attendees barreled out a side door. In a single instant, the husband reached back to roll the window up (but he rolled it down instead), Thor's going ape, the kids are racing toward the (Tasmanian) "PUPPY...!" and a friend of mine who was a stranger to Thor decided that was the time to reach through the window to pet him--but the husband didn't see her arm and got her arm caught in the window when he finally rolled it the right way while I'm trying to calmly usher the kids away from the "PUPPY...!"

The husband said the kids looked like little gumdrops to Thor. Mmmmm...not so much.

HAHA Johnny. Sometimes I just wonder what goes through (or not) people heads. My back widnows are dark tint so you really cant see in them, and Thalie is always shotgun, and the guy was on the back drivers side. the girls are quiet when the kids are still in the car, so he had no way of knowing what was in store LOL. Now, the girls only came at him for cookies and kisses, but he had no way of knowing this since I am sure his first impression of two large black dogs coming at him was not a good one. Sadie will bark, but once you put your hand up she will lick it and be your friend. Everyone at the gas station knows me and the girls ( Diesel+ truck= lots of trips to fuel up)

yes, that's how it was. Geeeeeeeeeez! to you, too. so many bad things raced trough my head even before my foot managed to get to the brake. it is a miracle that all turned out so well. but still frightening to think how crazy people can be and how much could have gone wrong all at once.

People never cease to amaze me... I get that kids typically don't know better, but I often wonder how some adults have survived as long as they have.

Awesome stories! And yeah, both funny and a little alarming at people's idiocy. They never have a chance, yet, to be surprised by Moko, as he is so hyper-reactive that he will attack the side of the vehicle if someone comes close, there's no mistaking that there is a scary dog inside. (We've been working on this, with improvement, but there's still no question that most people know ahead of time not to try and reach into my jeep!) I did have one guy at the pump beside me at a gas station nod and grin at me and say "I like your vehicle security system... I wouldn't mess with your jeep!"

Not a DS, but my old GSD, Cory, once surprised someone... I did night security rent-a-cop work as a summer job just out of college. I drove a cruiser and did rounds all evening, to lockup a building downtown, and do a few walkthroughs a night, several checks every few hours at various "under construction" sites around the city of Burlington and some neighboring towns, my GSD, Cory, accompanied me on my rounds. Drunk college kids on Main Street in Burlington always seemed to think the vehicle was a cab. It had a yellow light bar, and big, reflective lettering on the door that said "SECURITY" and the name of the company I was working for. But drunk college kids sthought it spelled taxi, apparently.

I was coming up from locking Main Street Landing, and as I approached the Flynn Theatre, a guy had one foot in the road hailing me, just then the light turned red and I'm thinking, "Oh, great, he's gonna think I'm stopping for him..." Sure enough, drunk-boy comes over and tried to open the shotgun seat door, which I'd locked, he then tries to open the back door, also locked, THEN, dummy reaches his arm in the halfway-rolled-down (for Cory,) rear window to unlock it, all the time I'm saying "I'm not a cab, dude, I'm NOT a cab, hey..." when his arm came in the window, Cory, who'd been laying on the back seat watching the proceedings with great interest, LUNGED upward with a deep chesty barking and snarling (didn't grab his arm, just made a big, scary noise,) and he snatched his arm back as though burned and peed his pants... standing there in the road with his hands up by his face shaking and mouth open in shock. I yelled one last time "I'm NOT A CAB!!!" as the light turned green and I continued on my way. In the rear-view mirror, drunk boy was still frozen in place by the side of the road with a look of shock and panic and a wet spot on the front of his trousers.

Autumn, I peed in my pants laughing !!!! I could just picture that too, I know the big barks the GSD's have too having lived with a 130 lb Belgian shepherd for a spell.

I felt so bad, once. We were hiking and Thalie was in the lead, as she usually is, and she went around a blind corner first, I hear a SCREAM, a young girl was hiking with her family and saw Thalie, she thought Thalie was a wolf. Now, Thalie is super calm and sweet and just stood there looking at her waiting for a pet.
