Dutch Shepherd Forum

I'm going to post this and then it is going to be some time before I come back and check on things. The other admins/moderators have been left in charge for awhile.

Here it is.

I was close to shutting the forum down recently and was talked into keeping it going. One of the things I liked best about this forum was the lack of trolls and how friendly everyone is. As you can see in the tagline: For the discussion of Dutch Shepherds. It does not say For the argumentof Dutch Shepherds nor does it say For the snarky passive-aggressive comments of Dutch Shepherds.

The inane arguments about "is my dog a Dutchie" has already driven off some people I respect most in the world of Dutch Shepherds. NO, I'm not saying that we still don't have knowledgeable and informed people still on the board. What I am saying is that brindle dog that you just picked up from pound probably isn't a Dutch Shepherd. Are their exceptions to his? Yep! I had one in my house. Pissed at myself for letting it go. Best dog I ever lived with. Where did it come from? No one is 100% sure - but at the time it showed up in a shelter was around the same time a known respected breeder dropped off the scene.

Picking up a brindle dog in Northern Central Indiana? Probably a KNPV line. There is an importer that brings them in by the dozens and washes them out. He has been known to dump them on the shelters.

Found one in central Florida. Good chance it is a Malinois/DS mix. Again, breeder that dumps the ones he can't sell. Breeds Malinois and Dutch Shepherds regularly and if it comes out Fawn it is a Malinois, comes out with Stripes...it is a Dutch Shepherd.

Personally - if I can't follow the lineage (and breeder's do lie) it is more than likely not a Dutch Shepherd. This breed is too rare for all the people that claim to have one.

Do you know the name of the breeder? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to advertise. I'm curious if he has anything to do with the large number of DS that show up in Chicago. I know where Elli came from, but Odin's first owners adopted him at 5 months and he was a stray with his sister. I always assumed it was one by Gary/South Chicago that advertises on craigslist and dumped a lot of the mals.

There are similar arguments in the fish world believe it or not. Basically they say if you do not know the lineage it is not that rare breed of fish you think it looks like and if you don't know who caught it, it is not a wild caught.
Might be nice to have a sticky in the appropriate section that explains what you wrote up there Eric.. Then we could point to it. I'm going to start a thread in "is this a ds section" see what you think.

It is like that everywhere, Horse world too.

Karen, we have " is my dog a DS " thread already. The chances they are if they are not from a [GOOD] breeder or NADSR seems to be slim. Just because they are brindle and look at you all day does not mean DS.
