I'd like to introduce myself and my new Rough Coated Dutch Shepherd, Cooper. My name is Cindy and I live in the middle of SC, about 20 miles from Columbia. Cooper is a 6 month rough coated Dutch Shepherd. I have two Anatolian Shepherd Dogs that are livestock guardians, two chihuahuas (worthless but loved house pets) and a female Amstaff. Roxy, the Amstaff is thrilled with our new addition because now she has someone to play with. Cooper and I will begin obedience classes in two weeks so I can better gauge what he is capable of. I'd love to do AKC and UKC obedience competition with him, and also possibly schutzhund if he has that in him. I am looking forward to learning more about this awesome breed!

Welcome from a fellow South Carolinian! He is adorable! Just out of curiosity: what made you choose rough coated over SH or LH?

DSs, of course, rule, but I really like the looks of a lot of Anatolian shepherds. They're lots of dog.

Thanks for the welcome! One thing I liked about the rough coated is the lack of Malanois blood. Dont get me wrong....I LOVE a good working Mal and appreciate them for what they are, but I wanted a dog that was a little softer, little less active. I know they don't all have Mal blood, but as a general rule, I liked the things I heard about the roughies. I also like the low shedding aspect of this breed. I realize the hand-stripping will be a bit more work though. I actually did not actively seek out a Dutch Shepherd of any kind. I knew I wanted a personal protection type of dog and was trying to figure out which one I wanted. When I heard this boy was available within driving distance so I decided to go see him. I am really glad I did! I have only had him a little over a week but already love what I am seeing. He plays hard outside with my Amstaff, and is quiet and content in the house. He seems to be very calm about new situations and strange noises. He is very alert and barks at strangers, but then settles down after a couple of minutes. He is not fearful or nervous at all.

The Anatolians are awesome dogs. So huge, yet so sweet and gentle. Unless something threatens their livestock. It's awesome.

I almost bought that dog, fkna Copper, in Cedar Mtn, NC near Brevard. I saw the ad in Cl and dismissed it...I have the CL printout dates 12/25/13-Congrats!

Hi Greg! You missed out. Your loss, my very happy gain. His real name is copper, but I liked cooper better and it is close enough that it was an easy change for him. By 12/25 he was already home with us. We picked him up on the 20th.

Happy to lose out to a fellow Carolinian DS forum member. My ego still gets the best of me when I get beat to a dog by someone with 2 DS's and a Mal already-like they are getting up a dog poker game..LOL

PS...Just curious... What city do you live nearest to...I am 40 min to Columbia SC at the GA/SC border.

I am northeast of Columbia, small town called lugoff. Do you do schutzhund with your dogs? Know anything about the club in Columbia? I am not sure how far I want to go with it, but some pp training at least wold be nice.
