Since Juith's response finally came in... here's some Blue Dutchies! In pure bred dogs it has not been seen (I'll leave it up to the reader as to why...) for a long time anymore, in KNPV lines it has, and I absolutely LOVE it. It does not show as well in a picture as it does in real life, but hey, we'll give it a go!

My love for blue's started when I met this malinois named Brenda, or Bren, but usually she was called "Janssen"

Ow, according to the standard a "black mask is desired" and therefore Blue is not a correct colour, but according to me,it does not say it's false either

Beautiful! I worked a blue malinois in MD for a while. I have only seen a handful of the blue dutch, and one was a great working dog. I just hope that the workability isn't compromised for the color at any point!

Arrgghh. My internet connection has gone from bad to worse (hence my sparseness here) and after an hour, it has only loaded part of Marjolein's blues.
The eyes do start out bright blue, yes, and turn amber with age. Quite cool, really.
On the mask, Marjolein, it says that a black mask is perferred. Otherwise, it says that the dog has dark stripes on a light background. The nose should be black, but a blue nose (yup!) is hard to tell apart from black, unless you have them side by side with a black dog. Blue is specifically listed as an allowed color on the rough haired version. (and hardly any of them are really blue) It is mostly the requirement for a dark eye that would leave the blues out of the winners circle in the show ring. But none of the characteristics of the blues are actually disqualifying faults at this point. A blue could not win, but a blue could pass, provided it is an othewise good specimen, of course.
Let me try to find my own blue collection.

Not likely! Blue will not win in the show ring, so the only reason to keep them around is to have and work them. Blues seem to have a following, though. I personally accept them readily, but would not select for it, afraid of CDA (= blue dog disease: possible hair loss on the eumalanin) I have not really seen it in DS's but it does affect most breeds that allow blue. Since the DS has eumalanin (black) and pheaomelanin (red) mixed through it's coat, it would not likely be a big problem like in for example dobermanns, who have entire black colored sections that would be prone to hair loss. But anyway. I know that Asheley has also had some blues (Pics Ash!!!) and maybe she can comment on the CDA risk.

I get it now... Izar is a blue dane.... He cycles with his hair loss. He has a handsome coat on his back but his under belly and insides of his legs and other spots lose hair, then it grows in, falls out... and on and on.. we lucked out though. I was told that this was because two blues were bred to get blue instead of a blue and a black.. Gwen.. she's not blue but I bet she'd like a blue stripey buddy!

I don't think anyone has ever bred for the colour. Especially in KNPV colour is the last thing they pay attention to. So it is, and I think has always been rare. Since in pure bred DS it was always thought of as "false", which it is not like Judith already explained, there have never been a lot of blues. Not visible anyway
In KNPV they pop up every now and than. I have more pics, but am too tired now... off to bed! I would love to see Ashleys pics tho!! And Judith's too, but I know it's horror with a dial-up connection so I'll try and be patient

and yes, Judith should definatly move into a more habitable piece of land, with modern stuff like phone's, broadband and proper toilets, and the only wildlife is a stray cat, but hey, she seems to like it that way

have a entirely blue Dutch Shepherd puppy. He is 9 weeks today. He has a patch of very thin hair atop his head as well as thinning hair around his eyes And backs of his ears. We're getting our second round of vaccinations today and will see the veterinarian this week to rule out mange. This thread really caught my attention and now I wonder if its a defect due to the blue. I've had him since he was 6 weeks old and it had already started to manifest. Pictures from birth to maybe 5 weeks didnt show it. I appreciate the thread and any advice or further knowledge would be great. Thank you.
