Tell us about yourself: Mom of little puupy named Juno. I actually rescued her from a rescue group who had no idea what she was. They found her litter in a box on the side of a road in new mexico. I got her when she was maybe 7 weeks. Through my own reasearch, I know she's a dutchie. So, here I am trying to found out more about the breed to give More of what she needs.

Do you think Juno is a Dutch Shepherd mix?

Post by Lindsayeg »

Hey there, my name is Lindsay, and I love my pupper no matter what. Trying to find info on Dutch shepherds is really hard, because it's not a well known breed. I don't think she is full blooded, but possibly a decent amount DS.
Backstory:
I rescued her last August from a rescue that helped with mommies and pups. They found her litter in a box on the side of a road in New Mexico, and they think she was born around July 1.
When I got her she was pretty emaciated (pot belly and all), and had a severe respiratory infection. It took her a good month to get better and be able to eat normally. She's grown at a steady rate since, and is not spayed yet. She's almost a year. I'm guessing just under 30 lbs and maybe 15-16 inches tall at the top of her head. She definitely has puppy energy, but maybe not the energy of a dutch shepherd. Her size, and the fact that she would rather be cuddling on my lap, tell me she's mixed with something small. But from pictures she looks like a dutch shepherd, to me at least. She's also VERY protective of me and my daughter. Let me know what you think.
Thank you!

Here's another pic of her. I have other pics, but it keeps saying the file is too large.

I’m no expert, but there is something about her face/neck that looks like a basenji to me. Her size is about the same as one too. I don’t really see any Dutch in there. Maybe she is a basenji mix?

That makes sense with the size, and ears ( I love her ears). But they don't stay pointed like a DS. Here are some better pics I just took of her.

What do you mean by “they don’t stay pointed like a DS?”

I meant with DS, what I've seen in pics (and the very small knowledge I have of them, they're ears are almost always at attention. They don't droop like hounds. Juno's ears stay pointed when she is fixed onto something, but most of the time they are pulled back and relaxed. They still don't droop like a hound, that was just an example.
I was almost thinking she might be mixed with a treeing tennessee dog or a plott hound, but her face is so narrow and slim.

There is a difference between a floppy ear and a prick ear that’s low and back. My boy’s ears are low and back probably just as much as they are at attention, it’s all body language and communication to them.

I dont see dutch shepherd...just because they have brindle coat color and pointy ears doesn't make them a dutchie mix. .

Where are you located? I recently just adopted a little dog very similar to yours here in central Texas! I’ll add some pictures. He’s about 22 pounds. I’m thinking he’s a Basenji mix
