Possible adoption
I recently met a dutchie at a shelter that I was thinking of adopting. My concern with him however is he had an unfortunate incident a few months ago. I actually was able to talk to his breeder who says that he was in his home in Detroit and his owner brought him to a garage sale where there was 25 families there. Apparently this dog gets nervous in a big crowd and since the owner did not remove him from the situation he snapped at and the bit at a few people. The breeder told me when she received him back from the owner he was visibly reinforcing the dogs bad behavior instead of correcting it. She then assured me that as long as I didn't put him in these situations and corrected any behaviors like this he would be fine. No one was hurt by the dog and when I met him he showed no signs of aggression whatsoever. My only concern is that my mom and girlfriend might have to let him out to use the bathroom at times if I was not there. The breeder also told me that as long as he was introduced and comfortable with them he'd be fine. She also said if she felt he was agressive or ever going to actually attack someone she would have put him down. Am I making a mistake in thinking of adopting him from the shelter or do you think this was a fear situation that can be avoided and or corrected. Thanks

Re: Possible adoption
it seems to me the dog wasn't socialized at a young age around people, you can correct it but i been told it will take time, if u socialize it everyday it should work.
did the owner live by him self no wife or gf?
it seems if u buy a dog from a woman it will be less socialized around men then u have problems bringing it into your home.
i am trying to socialize my sisters chilauwaua with me and other dogs she runs ,hides ,barks at me but getting better i been told it will take her along time to get comfortable/socialized around me.

- Tell us about yourself: I have had a DS for almost a year. Gwen and I are considering participating in PSA and or possible Ring Sport. I also have a Great Dane. I have grown up around working GSDs and my last GSD was a working K9 officer. I am all about dogs and animals in general and want to learn as much as I can about training.
Re: Possible adoption
Seems as if you can work through the poor socialization issues... It takes time and patience... Just curious who was his breeder? I am assuming in Michigan somewhere?

The breeder is located in pa, and she breeds bomb and drug smelling dog. He ended up with a guy who was encouraging his behavior by reinforcement rather than correcting his behavior. My mom met him today ad well as my girlfriend and her dog..no aggression at all and they both liked him..the shelter is now just waiting to hear back.
