Ok, one more question and thank you all for your sharing your experience and wisdom. What are some of the general differences (besides the obvious parts) between a female Dutchie and a male? I have read that dogs in general differ in that females protect people and males protect places. Is this just an "old dam's tale" or is there some truth to it? What personality differences can I expect from a female versus a male? Or, rather, are there any? Thanks again, SCFamily

One thing I've noticed about the dogs I know (pets) is that the males tend to mark and pee on stuff while my female does not embarrass me by peeing on the neighbours bar-b-q, in their garden, on their lawn chairs etc.

Or maybe thats just the dogs I know...

You stated in your introduction that you had always had GSD's. The differences between males and females do not differ per breed. It will be the same set of rules and so it is still total nonsense that bitches would protect people and males protect places.
If you don't mind, could please add a real name to your signature? I know it seems silly that we would like to know who we are having a converstation with, but that is one of the very few requirements on the forum.

In my overall dog experience I have found girls to be much more consistent in trying to get what they want, while males tend to be more direct. I have no science or experiments to back this up, just something I've noticed mainly from volunteering in shelters, it also doesn't apply to every dog, just an overall generalization. I've noticed males seem more inclined to put on a valiant struggle to do what they want, I correct it, and we go on our merry way for the rest of the day. Females seem more inclined to consistently try to do what they want and I tend to have to do more, softer, corrections

shame this thread died... I'm really curious of that also, because right now I have a male (small mixie) and have no idea what I should take when I decide on a dutch shepherd... I'm leaning towards male more, but would like to hear moooore opinions and experiences!

It is funny, I had always heard that Females are more protective of their home. Boys seem a bit more goofey and sweet (of course they pee a LOT on the walk). But this is my first Dutch shepherd, so I don't know.... I got a female because I had a male dog at home and I didn't want 2 males ever again.
