Possible broken toe

I think Xena has broken her toe.

She was all happy and excited getting out of her crate, and got a front middle toe caught in the crate front. She is not using the foot for the most part, but is still happy, playing and eating. She is keeping herself a bit quieter than usual. She can curl the toe, and there is no crunching she is just really tender on one side of the toe.

Here is my dilemma. But I have read a lot of conflicting advice regarding sprained/broken toes. Some vets say let them heal on their own, some say they will never be right, so they amputate, some put them in big casts up the leg (and oh, the horror stories about that!).

I am a little concerned about taking her to my vet, since they seem to be over the the top treatment, and I do not want a cast on her. Heck, my cats tummy ache costs over 600.00. Because they kept x-raying him and not finding anything. So they did upper and lower GI's and didn't find anything, so they kept him overnight and x-rayed again and guess what? Didn't find anything. His food just hadn't agreed with him.

Anyone out there with broken/sprained toe experience? She is 19 weeks old.

Thanks. I just took her to see my dad. He is an orthopedic surgeon. He feels like this is soft tissue damage and not a break and that she should be fine in a week. She is already using it a bit more. If she is not markedly better by monday, we will go see the vet.

I'm sorry to hear about the injury too; but glad it doesn't seem to be that serious after all. Hope she feels better real soon!

Glad it appears to be a soft tissue injury.
Hope she heals fast !

My Rott had a broken toe ( confirmed by x-ray). He had a padded bandage support wrap for a few weeks and healed up great.

Thanks for the well wishes. She seemed no better today, so we took her to the vet. He didn't even x-ray her. He said is was probably broken, but that we wouldn't do anything about it either way. He felt that in about 4 weeks either way. 81 mg buffered (but not coated) asprin 2X/day. I am feeling better about them not performing every type of test just because they could.
