Tell us about yourself: Hi.....my name is Angela. I have 2 daughters and 1 granddaughter. All of my dogs (and cats) are rescues. I have a puppy that we just adopted that I think could be at least part Dutch Shepherd. We also have a 2 year old pug/min pin mix and an 11 year old border collie and possible lab mix.

I have a question.....

Post by roxanne »

Do Dutch Shepherds shed like German Shepherds do? I have little fur babies all over the place! Haven't had those since my GSD passed away.

Im not sure how much GSDs shed, but my DS sheds quite a lot. I brush him with furminator every 2-3 days, and there is hair all over the place. I vacum every 2-3 days, tho I should do it more often if I wanted my house to be super clean. There isn`t any hair in my hands when I pet him, tho.

I've heard about GSD shedding. Boaz sheds a lot of clumps from his butt in the spring, but not like a GSD. We were at classes for conformation practice during that time and every time the judge touched him, hair would fall off. I think it's pretty much finished now. I just needed to rake him daily for a while.

Thanks! Nice to know it won't be GSD shedding again! I loved that dog and miss her to this day but the fur was impossible to keep up with! The weather in Ohio has been so up and down this spring. That does mess with the old dog's coat so it could be hers.

I think their coat also can get thicker as they get older. Dante is 15 and this year it is shedding off like lambs wool. Willow is 12 and I feel like she is much thicker too.

Thats interesting, I have noticed Thalies coat getting thicker. Sadies coat is not very thick at all, but I think her hair is a tad longer.

Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.
Can't wait for all the snow to get gone! Spring is coming too slow this year!

I think GSD's do shed a bit more, and it takes them longer to shed out. Also they have the double coat thing so they shed a bit all the time.
The DS seem to have different coat densities within the shorthaired dogs, not all the same, so probably the shedding varies with each dog.

Mine shed but no where near as much as a GSD, although right now as they're blowing fur it sure does feel like there's a GSD in the house.

Tell us about yourself: Had a GSD, am getting a DS puppy in a few weeks. Compete in agility, obedience, and cross train in tons of stuff. Found out about this site from the DS Rescue yahoo list.

DSs have a double coat, too...

But hands down, there's nothing like a GSD blowing a coat. Geyser's coat blowing is nothing like it. Still a mess, but so much easier to keep up with and get rid of with the furminator.

Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.

Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!

I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences.

Last year Sugar seemed to shed more then this year. There is fur everywhere, but not the "small fur puppies" like I remember from last year.
