Marjolein bathing Dingo

Okay, so it's really a hyena, and not really Marjolein either, but the thing is to let Dingo know everyone needs one occasionally! I thought of Dingo as soon as I saw this!

Man.....it even LOOKS like Marjolein!
If the first pic had had a nasty snarl, I would have said the one in the tub was, indeed, Dingo. But since he is just pretty stoic, I bet that this is Marjolein with an imposter.

Dingo does NOT look like that in the bath tho.... he has this serious look with green glance in his eyes

I am very proud to say I touched a real hyena once too! A rare one, the brown longhaired type, in Zimbabwe

Saidly I'm afraid the guy who let me in the enclosement got a nasty speech afterwards, or was even fired, as the zoo-keeper saw me and him inside the enclosure...big no-no... But I had been the first one in years to actually be interested and very fond of Hyena's. I LOVE those!! Everyone in Africa hates them, because they kill quite "nasty", start eating before animal dies etc... The campsite I stayed at later on that trip, we also had hyena's by our tent, heard them sniff and drule, a year later a boy (13) was eaten at that same campsite

He had been sleeping with an open tent, someting tickled his foot, he kicked...and he had kicked a hyena...bad idea...

Anyway, I really like these pics, wish it was me with the hyena there

Well, I am sorry that the person who let you pet the hyena

got in trouble, but I fear that he should have gotten in trouble indeed.

It is the zoo's liablilty, and they are responsible to make sure nothing bad happens. Did you (in Europe) hear about the boy (from Texas) who got mauled by gorilla's recently? He was at Jane Goodalls compound and climbed a fence he should not have climbed. The gorilla's grabbed him.

And so it goes to show that you had probably dodged a bullet, and at the same time, I understand your infatuation. How does their fur feel? It looks rough?

thanx, just spent over an hour staring at pics of "the old days" whilst getting the hyena pics...always gets "stuck" in those photobooks once you start...

You are right about the zoo keeper, hence my follow-up story... They are still wild animals. Even when it is a bit like cheetah's, they get so used to humans, you cannot put a "home-grown" cheetah into the wilde very easily. They become like cat's, and will approach any human, not to kill (usually...) but for affection. This Brown hyena is a very rare species, and was born and raised in the zoo. The zoo employees always just jumped in to clean and feed etc. They are like big headed dogs in a way, and are not as lethal as the wild ones...untill, offcourse, they decide otherwise

But back then, I was young and clueless (just clueless now) and after hesitating a second, the tour-guy jummped in and showed me how he petted the Hyena. He reached for my hand to help me jump in, my boss, who I was traveling with, she actually told me "come on, once in a lifetime chance!" (she was lucky she did not have to explain afterwards how her personell had just been eaten) and I did jump in, and look at my face, I loved it

Would not do it again...I think...mmhh?

(ow, poor quality scans of old pics...so... but it gives a general idea, and proof

enjoying myself, the Hyena is enjoying himself too, sniffing my butt. I remember this was a little less polite than most doggies would do...stuck his nose right in

Bye bye! Here you can see it a bit better, they have really long coats, but they are very rough, even when it looks quite fluffy, it is not. and he smelled bad, I remember that too

At twentysomething, I bet I'd have done the same.

The coat always did look rough to me, not surprising to hear that it indeed is. The stench though, I did not expect. So the original picture makes a bit of sense then, bathing Hyena?

I never can decide what pattern the coat has. Does it look like brindle, or more like spots?
Looking at 'your' hyena, he has much 'better' ears than the bathing one does. More pointy, less rounded. I assume that goes with the sub species (the brown hyena?)
Sorry to waste some of your time, making you dig in photo albums. But that's what the albums are for in the first place....to help us travel down memory lane.

But there is the most common "spotted hyena" this is the one in the bath pic. They are grey-ish to brown-ish, very short coated with...SPOTS!

Then there is the rare brown Hyena, this one is long haired and...BROWN!

They have "rings" of black around their short haired paws, like the striped ones... Maybe the longer hair covers the stripes underneath? Did not look like that. An I guess the stinky-ness came from all that long hair, combined with eating raw meat, lot's of druling (they drule a lot, making a sound like you know from a short muzzled dog "glllglgllhghgh") high temps... and NO bathing

So there also the rare striped version, they are short coated, Light grey-ish with the black brindle. I do not think it is a brindle actually, as it looks like the kind of pattern you see on a zebra. These live in the northern part of Africa, the brown ones just live in the south. The spotted is all over the continent, and used to live in Europe too...loooooooooong ago

And I'll admit, it was kinda nice going through those old pics

Marjolein's links sent me on about an hour long google exploration, as one thing always leads me to another. Some of the baby photo's I found are soooo cute!

Love the photo's of you with the brown hyena! How very lucky for you to be able to have that experience!

Like the African painted dogs! I WANT that pattern on my DS's. (but doubt I will ever be able to duplicate that)

Yup, they are great, and are my excuse to go back to Africa... Been there twice, my MUST see animals were Hyena, African wild dog (=painted dog), Lion, Elephant, Giraffe, Zebra, Hippo and the rest... in that order. Saw almost all, but never got to see de "wilde hond" as they say overthere (and in Holland too

). They are VERY shy AND rare, even when the people who took me really knew where to look, and had seen them on almost every trip they made looking for them, we did not see them when I was there

But hey, they say when you have been to Africa once, you will come back, so I will see them one day...I will...
If I remember, I will ask them in what gene they hide that nice pattern of them
