Tell us about yourself: Artist, Mother, Equestrienne, Educator, Homesteader wannabe, dog-lover. Not counting my current DS, I have had 2 GSDs and 3 rescued mixed-breeds. All of these dogs were rescues, except for my childhood GSD, who was a gift from my parents when I was 7, and my current DS who I bartered artwork for from the breeder. Maiyou, one of my current dogs, is a Pitbull/New Guinea Singing Dog of 13 years old. Still very active and "Young" in nature. I now also have a DS named Mokume, (pronounced "Moh-koo-meh") or "Moko" for short. Newest member of our pack is Freyja, a random mixed hound I rescued during a horseback trip in the middle of a state forest.

So, Moko continues to grow like a weed and make me alternate between adoration and exasperation. Pretty much doing his expected job as an adolescent DS.

I have taken to walking him in the very early morning ('cuz my prior 5am waking time wasn't masochistic enough...) as I wanted to get back into a better workout/exercise habit for myself, anyway. I know that despite all best intentions, if I try to do my own workout toward the end of the day, it just isn't going to happen. So that leaves the morning. (Moko gets lots of off-leash run/romp time at the farm every afternoon and an evening leash-walk, but I'm not into serious workout by then.)

We've been getting up between 4-4:30 a.m. walking (with occasional jogging/sprints for short distances to mix it up,) to the village green, and then Moko gets to practice sit/down stays and burpees tethered to the rail of the bandstand while I use the steps/benches and rail for pushups, stepups, crunches, pullups, lunges, and other silliness, (but no one else is awake to see how ridiculous I look,) and then we walk back home. It's been great and the added bonus is that with the morning exercise Mokume is soooo much more chill and lays at my feet happily chewing on a bone or approved toy while I'm prepping breakfasts, lunchboxes, etc. Where before, he'd either have to go right back in his crate after his morning potty, or I'd be multitasking between morning school-prep duties and constantly intercepting him with "Off!" "Leave-it!" "No!" as he tries to counter-surf or abscond with someone's boot, hat, child-toy, etc...

Yesterday, as I was finishing my workout, Moko suddenly leaped to a high-alert posture and let out a concerned whine/growl mixture. I looked where his attention was fixed (it is still dark, mind you,) and noted a man with two medium-large dogs by the poop-baggy station by the entrance to the green and so calmly told him "Thank you for telling me, Moko. I see them. We can go, it's okay." As I was coming down the steps, I was alarmed to note the two dogs come bounding toward us, off-leash.

I called out to the gentleman that my dog is fear-aggressive and please call your dogs!

I'm pleased to say that it could have gone so much worse, Moko, who normally would have been frothing and raging at the end of the lead and biting air, leash, and me, handled it so much better than I imagined! He did some leaping and whine/growling, but not his normal biting frenzy, even though the two dogs stopped at JUST barely outside of nose-to-nose distance, checked out Moko's body language and ran back to their man who was arriving with multiple apologies and clipping them back on their leads. Moko was agitated but way better than he's been in the past, and was even able to hear and respond to a "Sit" command while I briefly chitchatted with the man from a distance of maybe 2 yards.

We're a long way from being bombproof in his dog reactivity, but that was just such a huge step forward compared to where he's been that I wanted to kiss him! (I waited 'till we were home so didn't get a tooth knocked out by an upwardly-mobile, rock-hard DS skull! )

Autumn,

I love your story about Moko! the swings between intense adoration and exasperation is well known to all of us I think! Thank you for putting it into those lovely words.

I love your idea of spending the early mornings with Moko and training him while you physically train yourself! I'm finding that I'm also waking up earlier and earlier too. I haven't gotten to the 4am time slot (yet)!

I completely understand your intention of "bombproofing" your dog. I'm doing the same with Amber several times a week. I put a "service dog in training" vest on her and take her to malls, stores and offices. Today, she learned to ride the elevator. Two weeks ago, I took her to a very crowded market and she did great! Sometimes, the progress surprises me and I feel so proud. Other times, she becomes so reactive that I can't understand where she's coming from! The other day, she got scared of a little stone statue that we walked by a thousand times before. Who knows why!

Amber was adopted to an owner when she was 6 months (having had no previous interactions with humans) and she was returned to NADSR at 10 months. In those 4 months, she learned to be utterly terrified of people because she was put under the stresses of PSA prematurely. Before she learned that humans mean her well, her previous owner allowed the PSA training to teach her that humans are bad. It's always easier to "do" than to "undo", but we're making huge progress. The resiliency of the DS has always amazed me, and is the reason why I was so attracted to the breed to begin with.

I'm sure that Moko will get there! Looks like he's progressed so much already. Amber would pee herself at the sight of humans when she was 10 months. Now at 15 months she can walk with me through crowds and even get petted by a few strangers. We're going for the CGC in May/June.

P.S.
an upwardly-mobile, rock-hard DS skull!
- I nearly got a black eye once when I was petting Amber and she was being hyperactive.

Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.

Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!

I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences.
